Do you see a channel called homebrew channel? Sounds like a softmod to me. Only way to tell if it's hardmodded is to open it up and look for a chip if you have a softmod channel installed.

Would the presence of a Cios be an indicator of a softmod? Just trying to learn something myself here. I understand having to open it to confirm hardmod, but I think I recall reading something about softmodding an already chipped Wii.

You can have both a hard and softmod. If there is a cios that does not rule out the possibility of a chip. Many chip users softmod for convenience and apps.

power on your wii and press the reset button immediately aftwerwards, if you end up in a special boot up screen, white/gray background, you have priiloader installed, from here you can do several things, start homebrew channel or other apps directly.
I had a wiikey (chip) installed in my wii a long time ago, was the only way to play backups. right now a softmodded wii is the better way to run games, in my oppinion.
Actually it doesn't matter if you have a chip installed or not (stating backups don't run from normal disc channel=indicates no chip is present) with the homebrewchannel a good set of IOSs installed on your wii and some apps, usb loader/wiiflow/cfg launcher, you can run your backuped games directly from a usb harddrive which you connected to your wii.
for this just check out the forum with its several guides and tutorials to mod the wii, sounds like you don't have to start from the beginning but make sure you end up with a system with all its components to run games smoothly from harddrive or sd-card. Playing Games from USB

    Good luck

If it was softmodded a long time ago you can use the update your old softmod link in my signature to get everything up to the latest and greatest. It's a lot safer than removing stuff just to put it back on.
