supposedly it will update your firmware so no. it also wastes energy by keeping your wii on even when it's off. so no. why bother leaving it on anyway?

If you install Priiloader and enable block online update, WiiConnect24 will not update you "accidentally" or on purpose. The only real requirement for this... feature (?) is for the news channel or the weather channel. If a user would wish and has the hack enabled, one could leave it on (but it's not recommended for "standy" as heat build up ain't something you want to happen). Normally we advise most users 99% of the time to leave it OFF.

i leave my wiiconnect24 on with my modded wii. never had it update by itself ever, and there's no kind of heat issue that i've noticed, but that may be to the fact that i have a fan on the back and it's on the lowest setting. i like having the wiiconnect24 enabled because i like to read the news in the morning. much more fun and entertaining(and sometimes faster)than tv news programs!

either way, your call in my opinion. if paranoia is your cup of tea, then play it safe.

You're also required to enable Wii Connect when you use the Shop Channel . How do you get around that ?
