What modchip is this? Need advice!

I bought a second hand wii not knowing it had already been chipped and after soft modding my wii I kept getting error #001 on the newer games out.

After searching this forums I found that most people to solve this just needed to update there modchip to fix the problem.

So I opened my wii to look:

What modchip is that and is it updateable? If not could I just remove it (pull it of and put some electrical insulation tape over?)?

After a quick google it looks like the Wiinja.
Though it says Wiinja on the other side, so I can't tell for sure with this photo.

Depending on the version, it's probably not possible to upgrade it. Also, most of the early generation modchips stopped receiving updates a long time ago so don't get your hopes up.

My guess is that you can just remove the chip, making sure not to short out any wires or damage any contacts they are soldered to (properly desolder them or clip the wires and insulate them, don't just pull them off).

Then either go with your softmod, or buy a newer chip that does still get upgrades.

Would removing the modchip stop the "error #001 unauthorized device detected" error?

Yes it would, as the unauthorized device is that chip. Meaning there no longer is an unauthorized device.

Softmoding is the way to go. The guides here are up to date and are fully supported.
