Buying a Wii - which to get?

I've finally decided to buy a Wii and was wondering which model would be the best to get. The information on this forum is great, but a little disorganized for someone completely new to the Wii scene, who does not even have a Wii yet. So, I have a few questions...

    1) If I were to get one of the new black Wii models (for example, just go to a store and buy one new tomorrow), what are the chances of it coming pre-installed with the 4.3 system menu? With that hack, are there any hacked features of older system menus that will not work with the 4.3 system menu? If a full, complete downgrade is possible to grant all features of older menus, disregard this question.

    2) Are there any additional hardware differences between the black Wii and the white Wii, besides, the black models not being able to load backups via DVD-R?

    3) Which of the above support loading Gamecube games, either through DVD-R or USB? I assume all models and all versions of Wii and system menus can load Wii backups over USB.

    4) Given all of the above questions, do you think I should go with a new black Wii model, or grab a refurbished white Wii model from a used game store?

Just to give you an idea of my tech level so you can help me better, I have extensive experience with softmods for PSP, PS2, Xbox, and hardware familiarity with Xbox 360. I doubt I will have any problems with Wii softmods, but I would be very hesitant toward hardware mods for the Wii.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. New black Wiis & White wiis can't play disc backups. Impossible to know if it will have 4.3 but very unlikely.

    2. This question doesn't really relate to softmodding, so I can't answer it.

    3. Only a wii that does not have the d3-2 or d4 drive chip can play GC backups. GC games cannot yet be played from USB except VIA the WODE or SunDriver.

    4. That is entirely up to you.
    Damn I suck!!!!

Just try to get one as old as possible that hasn't suffered any obvious physicall abuse.
Nintendo's main objective in 2009 was to produce only consoles that contained a chipset to block disk loadin of backups (which you currently need for gamecube backups.
It was probably sometime in 2007 when they produced consoles that could not use boot2 bootmi, that allows it to load before the system menu.

The older the console, the more vulnerabilities can be exploited.

Doubt it will come with 4.3 yet. Even if it does you can still mod it.

No difference. All new wiis have the drive that can't read back up disc reguardless of color.
    3) Which of the above support loading Gamecube games, either through DVD-R or USB? I assume all models and all versions of Wii and system menus can load Wii backups over USB.

Since you can't load backed up dvd's you can only load GC through USB and to do that you will have to install a wode.
    4) Given all of the above questions, do you think I should go with a new black Wii model, or grab a refurbished white Wii model from a used game store?

I would grab an older used wii if I were you, unless you're planning on getting a wode and loading through external hdd.

EDIT: Guess I was typing to long. Shouldn't you both be shooting off fireworks and not showing me up with your quick typing, lol

Thanks for the quick responses! It definitely looks like I should go with an older model from a used game store, or maybe pawn shop, to get the best functionality out of the system.

Also, for the question about loading GC backups, I meant on any of the systems, including those with the drives that could load DVD-Rs. With the older drives, are GC backups possible in any form (DVD-R, USB, SD)? Sorry if I'm being redundant.

On the Xbox 360, if you have a problem with your drive, you can buy another DVD drive (of one of the 360 models) and swap it out (using some tools and changing keys, etc). Is that possible on the Wii? If I ended up with a Wii with a newer drive that couldn't play DVD-R, could I swap the drive out? If so, how difficult is that?

Last question (for this post), if I wanted to play Wii and GC backups, either DVD-R or .iso, in some form, about how old of a console should I get, manufacturing date wise?

Thanks again for all of the help. A lot of other modding forums I use are much slower with responses. Seems like a great community here.

I'd say at least a year and a half if you want to load from disc. There's a data base based off serial number that can tell you the odds you have the new chipset that prevents back up disc loading. Even on older wiis you still need wode to load GC from HDD.

November 2009 got me D3-2 drive, FWIW (we don't know the exact date of the switch over). From what I recall, most def need 1 yr+, agreed. I bought a non D3-2 drive off Flea Bay to do a swap out with (even though I have a WD 500gb external).

Just wants to thank you all again and let you know that I bought a used Wii from Gamestop with a manufacturing date in 2006. It has the older drive (which should be no surprise), and disc loading is working. I was able to do all of the softmods with no problem thanks to the great guides on this forum.

    Thanks again!

It could only be installed as an IOS, no boot2. It's working well, though.
