Playing a newer backup on an older soft mod

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I bought a Wii in July of 2007. In July of 2008 a friend applied a soft mod for me, but now it is time to update so I can play my new backup of "Transformers: Cybertron Adventures." When I try to load it from a DVD-R I get an "error #002".
I read Dogegg's FAQ but am not confident that I know enough to do something potentially damaging as a system menu update. I have a system menu of 3.1u but I don't know what IOS files I have (maybe ios38? I saw that on the SD card). If I understand correctly, to play a backup you need the proper IOS, is that all?

What would be the most direct course of action to take in order to make my precious backup load? Additionally, would you most recommended in my situation and why?

Your best bet would be to follow dogeggs tut. If u r on 3.1 I would assume that u will have boot2 and so would be able to make a nand back up an so be 99% brick proof and no need to worry about the softmod process

I saw that section about NAND backups but am not sure if I have a bootmii installed as a Boot2 or IOS. How can I tell? Nothing tries to load when I turn on my Wii with the SD card inserted, but then maybe the bootmii folder was deleted? It seems that the the Boot2 is the way to go since it will boot upon system start (awesome if it bricks) whereas the IOS will not (is there any way to unbrick with the IOS method?)

yes, you have to install priloader. from priloader you can run bootmii and unbrick if needed. good luck. One way to know if you have boot mii install as boot 2 is if when you turn on your wii the dvd drive flashes twice quickly. let me know.

No. Don't restore with bootmii as IOS. If you have to access bootmii from priiloader then you don't have it installed as boot2 and should not attempt a restore.
    Damn I suck!!!!
