Newbie - Just got a modded wii used and looking for info

    Hi,

I am a complete newbie when it comes to modding wii's. I have modded a few xbox's in the past.

I just bouhgt a modded wii, used and I have some questions.

I want to know how to tell what mod has been done and what versions of software is running. Is there a simple way to do this?

If this has been answered I am sorry. I looked around in the stickys and did not find my answer anywhere.

    Thanks!

If you mean the Wii itself, click settings and look in the upper right corner. If you mean other things (like loaders, etc) Neo Gamma for example announces its version when you load it. There's probably an "about" type box on other applications or they announce their own versions, depending. I'm not sure which/what things in specific you're thinking about...

As far as "what mod," well that'd be somewhat more involved... do you have HBC (home brew channel)?

I found out its running 4.2u in the settings.

I did find a homebrew channel I had not seen before. It has quite the list of things in it. I am afraid to run any of them because I am not sure they are safe. I know with my modded xboxes that if you ran the wrong software without knowing what it was you could brick it.

Here is a list of everything on the homebrew channel... some is simple to decuct what it does some is not:

    AnyregionChanger 1.1M5
    clos36Rev7
    cioscorp installer
    CMIOS installer
    Customer WAD manager
    DVD dumper
    DVD x Installer
    Hack Remover
    IOS downgrader
    Load Mii
    M player
    Pre loader
    SoftMii NAND Dumper
    SoftMii Tweak Toy
    Wad manager
    wii physics

The more I poke around the forum the more I relise I dont even know enough to ask a proper question yet. I posted too soon, and I am not sure what answers I am looking for. I am sure I will find some questions I cannt find answers to soon.

Right now though, I am wondering, is anything in that list not safe to open? I do not want to risk a brick before I learn enough to not scew myself.

You should delete that stuff and get something more up to date, that hack will not work with 4.2, look for a guide here at Wiihacks.

There are two different routes that you can choose for modding your wii. You can either Hard-mod your wii with mod-chips or you can Soft-mod. We have a in-house trusted supplier for mod-chips Here, very trusted site, and great customer service. When and if you going to hard-mod your wii there is a great section here on the forum. Mod-Chip Section
    ---
On the Flip-Side you can soft-mod you wii using only a SD Card... The guides that are here have been tried and tested and do work... DON'T FOLLOW FAIL-TUBE VIDS.... The first step that you need to do is find out what system menu version your wii is. After you find out that piece of information there are two guides that you can use.
If you are on 3.1-4.1 system menu you can use the guide by dogeggs: [[Guide]]
If you are on the 4.2 system menu the you can use the guide by Shadowsonic2: [[Guide]]

If some of that is what is installed, I can tell you two things. One, it's not a wiihacks recommended guide; two, it's out of date. I hesitate to offer further insight without knowing more. The fact ARC (Any Region Changer) is installed makes me wonder if this is not originally a US version, but something else (Korean, for example). cIOSCorp installed in such a scenario keeps that unit from error #003 permanent brick. Again, purely speculation as to your Wii's origin; the seller give an indication?

There's a danger in this if ARC was used on say a Korean unit and we advise this user to delete everything. IDK enough to make this call with the information this user has thus far presented.

This is the main reason I am afraid to do anything. Uncertain of where it was when it was modded in the first place.

The seller told me, he bought it localy from best buy here in the US. He also said his friend modded it and he knew nothing more than how to run the games.

I am leaning toward beliving him that it was a US console, because of the reason he was selling. He told me he works as a regional something at best buy and is moving accross the country. He did not want to ship his stuff, so he had listed many things online for sale.

That being said, thats all I know. Is there identifying info on the console somewhere I can check to confim any of this?

As for "That hack will not work with 4.2" I dont know what to make of that. As this Wii is currently playing backed up games from a external hardrive.

The list is what I found in the homebrew channel, leading me to belive it is "installed". However I really dont know this.

I am currently in information overload from everything I have read here

Mostly trying to make sure not to do anything to brick it, while I learn.

I am happy to provide any info I can in regards to any of this.

I am working on reading the info provided, there is much to consume.

Thanks for all your replys and help!
