Question Best backup method in case of a brick?

Hey all, it's my first post. I've been lurking for a while, and finally registered. I'm new to the community. I purchased a Black Wii running 4.2 last week, and so far I've installed the homebrew channel, Configurable USB loader, and ZSNES. Now I'm starting to think about brick protection. I've read that on newer versions of Wii firmware, that Bootmii cannot be installed as boot2 anymore, and instead needs to be loaded as an ios, does this not remove the effectiveness of bootmii as a brick backup? If my system menu is corrupted, how am I supposed to get to the Homebrew channel to run bootmii from the ios?

I've read about Priiloader also, and it seems that I can boot directly into the homebrew channel with this program, however I've seen many warnings not to run this program with custom ios installed, which I have several which were needed for the Configurable USB loader.

Is there an effective way to back up my wii 4.2 in case of a brick? I was thinking installing bootmii as an IOS and installing priiloader to load directly into homebrew, but I don't want to screw anything up.

    Thanks!

There is a softmod guide or two here, that if you had followed either one of them would have safely guided you through the optional step of installing priiloader. There are also standalone guides for it here as well. You just need to search for them
It is the best option for anyone's situation since it can prevent updates as well as boot alternative files and HBC itself when the system menu cannot be accessed.

Thanks! I've seen several tutorials for softmodding. The one I used had a step for installing bootmii, but I did not install it at the time, as I had read it wasn't too effective anymore since Nintendo patched the boot2 exploit. I was trying to determine which route to go because of that. I'll install Priiloader this evening.
    Thanks again!

I have personally used bootmi (installed as an ios) to go back to 4.0 from an accidental 4.1 upgrade last summer. It has it's usefullness, the problem is in the instance of a full brick, nothing will be able to be accessed since bootmi in this situation does not boot before the system menu does.
You will simply have to be more careful (hasn't been a problem for me so far) and read all the warnings (usually in big red letters) before doing things.

Right. I don't anticipate any problems as I'm very careful regarding tampering with my Wii's system files and I typically read up on everything I modify, for several days, before I do it. I just want to have a fail safe in case, god forbid, I do mess something up on my system.

there are guides for restoring a NAND backup without having bootmii installed as boot 2. Recovery disks, etc. Since you have installed Priiloader you will at least be able to use the guides should something go awry.
