A huge bunch of Qs for all you Wii enthusiasts out there:

Ok, it's time for me to fess up: I have no clue what I'm doing.

I bought my Wii close to 2 years ago, and in that time, I've modded it to have a black casing, soft modded it to play DVD backups, soft modded it to play wad files, emulators, and everything else under the sun. My most recent hack was to enable Gamecube emulation, which is where I think all my probems started. Ever since I did that - I used the program that modifies my cIOS, I believe - I have been unable to play backup discs from the DVD drive, which isn't really a big deal other than my pride being hurt in knowing I screwed something up down the line. So, after thinking about the DVDs not working, I started thinking about all the different changes my poor Wii has gone through - everything from the original Twilight Hack to installing the Bannerbomb hack when I accidently updated the system menu, to the most recent Gamecube support, I've realized that I've been incredibly lucky in that I haven't bricked my Wii yet. So, here's the question(s) I have for all of you.

    1) Should I start over from scratch? I'm nowhere near my console right now, so I'm not even sure that there's a "master reset" of sorts to start over.
    2) If I can't start over, should I remove everything that I've installed and begin again?
    3) I don't even know what IOS files are installed on my system. Hell, I don't even know what an IOS file is! I've just been told to download it and install it if I want program x to work. Same with cIOS files (if there is a difference).
    4) What IOS/cIOS files should I have installed to enable me to run games from my DVD drive, Gamecube backups, homebrew, and HDD support?
    5) What security features (NAND backup, etc.) would you all recommend and would they be feasible with my system?

    Wii Specs (from memory)
    -LU63xxx system
    -Wii system menu 4.1U

Any info would be really helpful in trying to sort this all out, and who knows, I may learn something in the process.

    Is HB actually still running?

You could run it and let people see whats going on with your system

As far as I know, everything is still "running," in the conventional sense that the machine boots up and does everything except read Wii backups off of the DVD drive (GC are ok). What would I need to do to what you've suggested?

I think he means syscheck that's linked in his sig. If you run that and post the report here it would give us a better idea. To answer a few of your other questions: Bootmii installed as boot2 if you can is the best brick protection you can get if your wii is old enough. After bootmii Priiloader is the next best brick protection. Yes, installing bad wads would be a bannerbrick and there is a sticky in the bricked wii section for fixing this. I never recommend virginizing a wii in order to resoftmod. Lets just fix what you got.

I need some sleep not stringing things together very well today at all, thanks for the correction.

    To OP

    D/L sys check
Put syscheck folder in apps folder sd://apps/syscheck
Go to HB and run Sys Check
This will save a csv file on the root of your sd card
Open that in word or alternative txt editor
    Copy and paste contents here

    Syscheck 1.6 returned the following:

It formatted it as an excel file, so this was the easiest way to display everything and not screw up the formatting.

EDIT: Attached original jpg for proper viewing - I didn't realize the image was kinda small...

    Everything looks ok to me.

You are on system menu 4.2 as ios 70 is present

    You could change 249 (rev 14) for 249 (rev17) http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...installer.html

Your ios's look up to date.

What usb loaders have you got? Maybe want to update those/it? Wii flow is a good one - http://www.wiihacks.com/other-faq-gu...-settings.html

Updated neo gamma's are here http://www.wiihacks.com/software-bac...-channels.html

Also you could install Hermes. I have V4, in my sig
    Install as Messies guide
D5) You can now install ios202, ios222, ios223. From HBC, run cios222 installer and select ios249 to use. At the next screen, choose the following, one at each turn:
-ios202, for usb - using ios38 (needed for USB2.0 support at Media Players)
-ios222, for uloader - using ios38 (needed for USB support of instruments and stuff)
-ios223 mainly for GH5 - using ios38 merged with 37 (same as above)
Mind that you will need an internet connection for this!!
If you havent got pri loader then get it, you can check if you have it by holding down the reset button whilst powering on the wii. http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...preloader.html

Also this guide is for setting up your hdd http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...s-usb-hdd.html

Someone may come along with some more advice so just have a look through the stuff I have given you.

Ps. To open a csv file just right click on it and select 'open with' and select word

I could have sworn that I had 4.1. Then again, I may have downloaded a safe installer from waninkoko for the 4.2 system menu (if such a thing even exists. Again, I'll have to wait until I'm home)

    Will do.

Your ios's look up to date.
This was my biggest fear; I was worried that I had either installed something I shouldn't have installed, or that I got the wrong version of an IOS file that could potentially brick my Wii. However, now I'm even more confused as to why my Wii has Gamecube backup support, but cannot run a Wii backup from any loader - I've been using NeoGamma and WiiGator, I believe. Also, I've tried launching a backup from USB Loader GX directly, and it's still a no go.

What usb loaders have you got? Maybe want to update those/it? Wii flow is a good one - http://www.wiihacks.com/other-faq-gu...-settings.html
I'm currently using USB loader GX, and that seems to work fine. I know that I'm contradicting myself when I say that I want my Wii backups to run off of the optical drive when my HDD loader works like a charm, but the fact remains that it isn't working the way it should, and I want to know why.

I'll try this tonight to see if this remedies my situation above.

Also you could install Hermes. I have V4, in my sig
    Install as Messies guide
    Again, tonight.

If you havent got pri loader then get it, you can check if you have it by holding down the reset button whilst powering on the wii. http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...preloader.html
I'm pretty sure I have it - that's how I got into this mess in the first place. I was playing with things I didn't fully understand.

Also this guide is for setting up your hdd http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...s-usb-hdd.html
This I've pretty much got down; my only concern is that, when using USB Loader GX 1.3, I try to rip a game straight from the Wii drive, and the program briefly flashes that it detects the game, then goes to a blank screen. Any idea what that's about?

Someone may come along with some more advice so just have a look through the stuff I have given you.
Any and all advice is appreciated. I'm on the older end of the Wii demographic (nearing 30), but I understand almost anything thrown at me with regard to how to do something, so long as it's explained clearly. I've also worked with computers for a good 12 years, so the terminology isn't all that new to me. I appreciate you taking the time to give me a list of to do's and I'll definitely try all of them as soon as I can.

Ps. To open a csv file just right click on it and select 'open with' and select word
I did that, and for some reason, the formatting was all funky. The Excel sheet seemed to be an easier read. I'll give it another shot with Word if I need to, though.
