wiikey installed long time ago - what do i do next to ensure wii is up to date

    Guys

Apologies in advance as I have not logged onto the site or used my Wii in a very very long time :-( Sorry

I had a wiikey installed into my wii about 3 years ago & have updated the wiikey itself about 1.5 years ago when i was told i needed to do so in order to play Mario Kart.

Since then i have not done anything with the Wii & I would like to ensure it is up to date so that I can play games such as Fifa10.

I think that my firmware version is 4.0E. When i went into the Wii Settings this was at the top right hand corner & I couldnt see anywhere else where I could find the FW version.

I have seen the guide on here & on youtube for the softmod that installs the Homebrew & BackUp channels. Is this all i need to do to update my Wii?

I would also like to mod another wii for my nephew which has never been modded so would I also just follow the TUTS for his FW version.

Many thanks in advance guys & for your patience for us Noobs :-)

    Cheers

    Bart

There is a different guide for 4.2, so you want to check what firmware you Nephew has.

Never follow a Fail Tube Video

If you have a problem with any of the guide ask questions in the guide thread or have a back track through to see if someone else has had the same problem.

Stay below 4.2 --- hardmod side won't play out of region games @ 4.2 (softmod will).

thanks for your help guys its much much appreciated

so it is safe for me to do the softmod as well whilst having the hardmod installed?

as as nightstah suggested i shouldnt update the wii to 4.2?

when wanting to play any backup games can i do this as i normally would with my hardmod or do i need to do anything different?

also there are some terms mentioned which i dont understand in the guide such is IOS & CIOS, is there a glossary anywhere where i can find out what all these mean?

If you want the ability to use USB HD, softmodding is a nice thing. Your Wii can be both soft and hard modded. If you launch via softmod, you'll have to use a backup loader (accompanied in the download for the softmod) and it will only spin @ 3X as opposed to 6X.

A cIOS is simply a Customized IOS. An IOS is like BIOS (Input Output System). Ithian has an article on IOS here. The sole purpose of 4.2's introduction is to kill homebrew. You may elect to stay on 4.0 or can update to 4.1 safely --- provided ---- you follow one of the previously linked Recommended Guides.

If you elect to do the softmod (encouraged) and are also interested in the previously mentioned USB HD gaming, look here. Good luck.

    Thanks again for the reply

Am I right that if i softmod as per the info above would i have to burn any dvd games at 3 speed or lower?

USB HD does this mean we can play games off a USB?

And finally after this softmod can i play divx files via either USB or the DVD drive.

Sorry again for all the questions
