Okay, I gave Wiiflow a go, and it seemed to work better than USB Loader GX, but it still wouldn't allow me to run a game. It DIDN'T hang though! Instead of freezing, I got an error: "Error while reading a game disc."

After the error pops up, the Wii resets itself and send me back to the Wii Menu. If I try to go back to WiiFlow, it doesn't immediately recognize the USB Drive, I have to pull it out then plug it back in for it to be detected.

    Solution

I was having the exact same problem!
go here Downloads - usbloader-gui - Project Hosting on Google Code
    download r889.dol and r889.wad
rename r889.dol to boot.dol and put in sd cards app/usbloader_gx/ folder
and put r889.wad in the /wad/ folder
    wallaa
    worked for me

I was having the same exact issue. Sucks having to go back to r889, but it's working, so that's all that matters right now!

what if i do not have a app/usbloader_gx folder. do i simply create one? all i could find was a USB Loader GX r929.wad file in the wad folder of my sd card....i have it installed as a channel not in home brew. Sorry im really new to all this wii modding, sorry if my questions are dumb or ignorant.

I depends if the wad is a forwarder or the actual dol file has been injected into the wad.

Have a look at this thread about setting up usb loader gx
