Western Digital My Passport Essential 320Gb

I have read much about these hard drives now, and most -not all- seem to like them, along with the high compatibility rating.
But before I spend the 50 bucks on it... I want to know more about this VCD that is one the newer drives, since I'll be buying a newer one. With the protection that comes with this hard drive, is disabling it enough for the Wii to recognize the formatted partitions that I will have on there? I know that the VCD is on the bridge, not the actual hard drive, and I've read that you need to fully update the software, and then disable the VCD on the drive... but I have yet to read anything from anyone who has actually tested this with their results. I don't want to spend money on something that isn't going to work, I'm limited in the money factor.
Can anyone reassure me that this will work? Or tell me of your experience with this?
If there is a better drive to get, with either higher compatibility or less frustrating work, then let me know too.
Here is a link to the disabling the VCD, if that helps.

I have turned this off using a small app from their site, on several drives and never had an issue with it.

Alright, that's one good response so far. Thanks.
