So how have you got yours set up different from your friend? What File System are you using? What partitions do you have?
    Regards

    Thanks for the reply renke_uk

i had abit of bother getting the ex hdd from ntfs to fat32 so i can then change it to WBFS had to use xp and swissknife to do it i partitioned the drive as 1 primary drive didnt bother with multiple partitions as its for the wii only

also swissknife formatted from ntfs to fat32 in seconds.....i just wonder if the formatting is my problem!

If it was me i'd stick with fat32 rather than converting it to WBFS.

I like this formatter:- Fat32 Formatter
    Best Game Manager:- Game Manager

CFG USB loader works well with Fat32
I have had a few issues with wii's that require external power supply's, drives spinning down or going to sleep.
Also are all your cIOS's up to date?

Any chance of trying your mates drive?

You CAN load off of fat32. I prefer WBFS.
    Damn I suck!!!!

In the earlier days of USB HDD, yes the drive had to be WBFS, but as things developed CFG USB loader was written to use WBFS or FAT32 (and even read from NTFS, but not copy to it).
So as you can see you arn't tied to WBFS, this is uaseful as you don't need a Wii Game manager to see what games are on your HDD, also you can Drag 'N' Drop between drives if required.

Because the game itself becomes a .wbfs file the drive no longer needs to, so you can have games, movies & PC files all on one drive.
However you still need a Wii game manager to copy the game from a pc .iso onto the HDD.

IOS's & cIOS's change as improvements and enhancements are made/added.

cIOS's are usually updated via standalone installers that you run via HBC
IOS's & Channel updates can be done using DOP-MiiV12 an excellent piece of software capable of a wide variety of tasks

    Waninkoko's cIOS:- 249
    Herme's:-202,222 & 223

    Regards
