    Best Wii revision?

Apart from whether or not the DVD drive is D3-2 or not, is there any benefits to having a certain revision Wii? Also, according to Wiidrives.com, my Wii has a 50% chance of having the D3-2 drive. Is the only way apart from taking apart the Wii to find out, to softmod it, and try booting a game from the DVD?

One final question: On nintendo's website, they state that 4.2U contained anti-piracy measures as well as system-wide enhancements and fixes. I figure a lot of trouble could be prevented by simply installing 4.2, and using the 4.2 softmodding guide to softmod. Any opinions would be great, thanks!

If you have a choice, get an older wii that has a vulnerable boot1. The dvd drive is irrelevant with the use of usb loading. There is little difference between 4.1 and 4.2.

Avoiding 4.2 will display your disdain for anti homebrew updates.

But going with 4.2 displays your total disregard for anti-homebrew updates

Haha, I never actually thought of not updating as a protest of sorts. Although, lets be honest, Nintendo and its partners do lose quite a bit of $ on a very reasonably priced system with reasonably priced game released, and reasonably priced VC/WiiWare titles. I don't think an anti-piracy measure on their part is unreasonable whatsoever. That being said...

My Wii is LU4054xxxx. My main concern isnt being able to not play Wii games via DVD backup, but rather Gamecube games. Does the D3-2 drive only affect readability on the Wii part, or GC as well?

It affects both. You can still play originals but you can forget about backups

ps i think that a lot of wii games are over price when you compare content to dollars.

Oh well. I'm not going to lie, I mainly use my Wii for internet browsing in bed, and playing Snes/GBA, and a Wii or GC game every now and then :P. So I'm not too worried. Thanks for the info guys. Just got my 2nd wii and as soon as I eat my dinner, its time to get to work.
