A Wii can be both hard and softmodded. Your choices depend on the chipset and type of Wii Drive installed-there are guides and you can also contact one of the recommended modders in the Hard Mod Forum. As for updating your softmodded Wii, there is a guide specifically for updating a previously softmodded Wii-if you are having problems with that guide, please post in the thread associated with that guide. Best wishes.

Hi, one question: is there any way my Wii can play .avi files from USB drive with just the hardmod, or do I need the softmod anyway? Thanks.

If you are thinking of only a modchip, then no it will not play media files. However, the WODE, I believe does allow one to play a number of media files, including .avi.

yes, u can play a numerous number of media file format in Wii. I have just learnt it too. I have tried both Mplayer (http://www.wiihacks.com/homebrew-app...r-ce-r592.html) and Geexbox (http://www.wiihacks.com/wiihacks-new...-quextion.html) . I prefer GeexBox better. I can even play media file from my USB HDD.

    Hi myahbeng,

thanks for your reply but my question was do you need a softmod to play media files and the answer is yes - in fact, MPlayer, Geekbox and the likes all need a softmod to run if I am not mistaken.
Since you mention it, I suggest you try WiiMC which is my favorite Wii media player - it has a nice interface, some nice features and can also play YouTube videos.

    Us Please Help

Sorry but I'm what you would call a newb to all of this. this is the first time I've used a forum and first time in wiihacks a friend of mine has a wii that backs up all of his games to his hard drive and also has the ability to save the cover art. He also said that you need a memory stick to keep things running. What exactly do I need memory wise and program wise. Your help you be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    p.s.
I got the Limited edition wii (red)

Guide explaining the pieces to the wiihack jigsaw

I have been clicking a reading a hell of a lot on this site and managed to somehow softmod my wii and even got as far as getting cod black ops working.
Despite this, i still dont have a clear understanding of what it was i was installing.

As far as i know this is my understanding (please correct accordingly):
HBC (home brew channel) allows me to run apps
WAD - apps that do stuff
WAD manager which installs wads as channels
CIOS - modified version of the wii software
loaders - e.g. uloader that start games
forwarders - shortcuts to apps stored on sd cards

Its the versions and how they fit in to the bigger picture that i dont fully get.
eg. i needed cios 249 rev 59 (i think thats right) to get COD to work.
SO i grabbed the wad and installed it. This wouldnt work in uloader but did in neogamma.

Is what i have summised from wiihacks correct or should i fetch my coat?
