    Krank thx for ur answer
I do NOT plan to do both --soft and hard mode, i actually plan to do only hard mode eventually.
soft mod seems that it does need quite some maintenance --and even more for specific popular games.
I have my 360, my psp, my ds and in a way my pc and my ps3 to keep in game-ready state!
So i am looking for an "easy" way to be able to check some games in wii.
It seems that the region lock is the only thing that firmware is locking in hardmods.

Still are some hard mods actually more future proof than others?
I mean most new-ish ones support some way of updating.
I would be willing to pay for lets say a wode--to be able to load from external hdd as well, but there are rumors of some problems it has.
I may even go all the way back to a simple wiikey, even version 1 as my console is supported.
Every new thing speaks about it being future-proof, but why should i care for it?
I may even wait a bit (?) more yet again for the new thing from Sun, but would that be worthy?
sorry for yet more questions but i kinda need some more answers...
    and thx again!

Like I said you need to do some research on the modchips and find out which one will be good for your purposes. I would suggest only buying one that is still supported by the team and still has updates released for it. Some users with the drivekey I believe, are stuck not being able to play newer games because they haven't released an update for it. I think WODE or sundriver are both good choices and If I were looking for a hardmod I would most likely go with either of those two.
    Damn I suck!!!!

The only way >4.2 hardmods will every be able to play region free games again, is if they patch the region flag of the game partition on the disk- this will require every hardmod to patch their system ios to work. The only reason chips have been able to region free until no is that the region flag of the disk is not signed, and can be changed by the chip. >4.2 check the region flag of each partition now, and these are signed.

All hardmods should stay at 4.1, and they should bannerbomb dop-mii, fakesign ios36 and use that to update any needed ios files. Updating will only bring more and more security checks, which will likly only be cercumventened by patching the system.

So, DON"T UPDATE, regadless of your hardmod/softmod status. Everything should be done by hand.

Cause modchips are used primarily for disc loading backed-up/out of region games and HBC is for Homebrew apps. Can't get HBC with a modchip now can ya

I'm so stupid, I updated before checking any posts and now I'm stuck with my Pal wii not willing to play the NTSC games which are approx 1/4 of my games could you please tell me what can I do? I read your comment but I don't unerstand what you meant. Although I've had my wii chipped about 1.5 years ago, ever since I had no problem with it so I'm kind of a newbie. Pls pls pls pls help Thanks

Other than the brick thing, dunno why I would want hardmod over soft... Love the HBC, NES, SNES etc options.

Can you hardmod your wii if it is already softmodded? How does that work..does it just remove all the homebrew stuff or do you just boot up a game and still have everything? This softmod I have is driving me nuts on trying to update it..might just go with a hardmod if possible. What is the best one to get in everyones opinion?
