4.2J Softmod Nightmare...
Greetings from Japan.
I picked up a brand new black Wii 4.2J from Yamada (Japan's Best Buy) last week. My Nihongo knowledge is pretty basic, so I wanted to turn to softmodding as a way to enjoy games in English. You can't rent games in Japan, and they are insanely overpriced, so I was also intent on learning how to DL games versus shelling out the equivalent of $60-70 bucks (the yen is crushing the dollar lately).
I turned to this guide for help:

It all started out well. I had Homebrew and Bootmii (as an IOS was my only option). I backed up the NAND. However, at
Step 3 - Restoring The Bug Into IOS36
I started to get a little lost. I didn't see an option of "downgrade to IOS15." It only said that I could install fakesign. Is there a more detailed explanation of this step for a noob like myself? I installed the patches and downloaded from NUS with no problem, but I was confused about the "downgrade."
Step C threw me for a loop. How do I restore IOS15? There was no "restore" option available on my screen...
I then went to the next step and removed the stubbed IOSes. No problem. Step 4 and 5 went smoothly. Even step 6 went without a hitch.
Then came step 7. Priiloader would not load. It just kept returning to the Homebrew screen over and over again. When I reset, it magically opened with Priiloader. So I went through step 7.
Step 8 was also no problem.
Then, it came time to test some DVDs that my friend brought along that worked on his softmodded Wii.
No dice. "DVD read error (1053).''
So we tried an actual American Wii game.
Same read error.
When I finally gave up and decided to just play my Japanese Mario Bros game that always worked without a hitch, I clicked the standard top-right channel to play the game, which popped up with a blue screen, in English, saying that there was an error and I needed to eject the disc and consult my instruction manual... This horrified me.
I restarted and put the game into NeoGamma and it worked fine. Phew.
However... I didn't achieve any of my goals. And I need to press 3 extra buttons just to play a REAL Japanese game on my Wii...
Any suggestions? Fixes? Can I completely un-softmod and start over?
I'm in the middle of nowhere in northern Japan with only a small handful of gaijin, so I am on my own here. Please help a brother out!
