had you made a post in the introduce yourself section of the forum you'd have learned that your black wii probably will not be able to play burnt discs. It has a new chipset in it, but you're still able to load from usb. The guide you need to use is the 4.2 guide by messie to get softmodded.

i'll run through the steps and hopefully it'll be ok

are you sure about the black wii lack of dvd support?

when you say i can use usb, does that mean i can plug a portable usb drive into it?

There's a chance you don't have the new chipset, but I've never heard of a black wii that didn't have it. You have to do the same softmod either way so when you've done it, I'd make a back up of your wii sports game and try to play it. If you can get even 1 back up to play then you don't have the chipset. Yes, by usb I mean a compatible usb hdd or thumb drive.

ok so after some intensive reading i think i'm ready to attempt it

are there any last minute tips, and also watching the youtube help video from messies guide it shows a gamecube controller, is this essential in the softmod process?

thanks for the help everyone, bit worried about doing it, but gonna pick up a wd portable drive tom so should be fine hopefully

only part that would require a game cube would be if your bootmii install as an ios didn't respond to the normal navigation by pressing the power and reset buttons. You can always do that nand back up later even. If you're able to do it then do it, if not, get a controller and do it asap

    DVD vs. USB

    My two cents:

I personally like USB loading over DVD. Burned DVD only read at 3x where actual Wii games read at 6x speed and usually end up with choppy video and sound playback during cut scenes. It doesn't normally affect game play so its up to you.

I use USBLoaderGX as my usb player with a 1TB HD. I took all my games and clicked the "+" icon and ripped all my games to my HD and play them from that. Very easy and the GUI that USBLoaderGX uses is great. I have had used several DVD and the burning process as well as having to keep the disk on hand to play make using the USB a no brainer!
