    Thanks.
But as soon as I connect to the internet I'm forced to update so I'm in a dead end alley here. I must have one of the first firmware's that were released ..

well if it won't let you configure wiiconnect24 settings then your probably safe... you cant disable the update question after a connection test but if wiiconnect24 is off then you shouldn't get any other update messages

If I helped you at all or contributed in any way please hit the lil' thanks button!!!

Im definately on version 1.0 or 2.0 so I decided to borrow Super Mario Kart from a afriend and apply the update thats on the disc.. after that I should be able to choose Yes/No instead of just an OK button
And after that Ill softmod it

You would definately need to do something along these lines to get to a system menu version that is modable. You need to make sure the game and your wii are of the same region or you will have a semi-brick.

Do NOT do this, you're asking for big trouble.

Believe that will take you up to 4.2

Since when was that a statement that gives you a green light to do something that will ( not could) make trouble for you later.

If you are up to it then who am I to stop you.

Good luck my friend, and copious amounts of it too!
    Thank you!!

I better research more about this then.
What do you suggest I do? Here is my current situation:

I have a Japanese Wii from 2006 that has never been updated and is using system menu 1.0 or 2.0 (I cant verify the version as it isn't displayed)

I want to softmod it, but since I'm at version 1.x or 2.x I believe I have to update it to 3.x before I do this? Atleast the guides on this forum are for 3.x or 4.x versions.

The only way I believe I can get to 3.x is to use a game title that has a more recent firm version on it? If I connect to the internet I'll probably get 4.2. According to this list here Super Mario Kart has version 3.1 on it. (And yes I will borrow a Japanese version of the original Mario Kart DVD)

If the above isn't a smart idea, please let me know what is

There are such things as update ghosts. They used to be content with making noises and scarring ppl, but now if you don't leave the house they are haunting, they will update your wii. Also bigfoot wants a wii.
