    GameCube Backup Question?

I know I have read that its not possible right now to play Gamecube games off of a USB Loader and HDD. I know you can play backup discs though. But my question is along the lines is the reason that you can't play them off a hdd cause its not possible or just no one has worked on it yet?

I appreciate what everyone has done on this site and I have done a decent amount of wii's now more than a couple anyways and never had an issue with all the guides on here so thank you.

ANyways I have a customer that their wii's dvd drive no longer works and wants to play all their games off of a HDD and I am doing it for them with their wii games just was hoping for a workaround eventually with their gamecube games.

    Thanks for the help.

Im not sure about this, but ive read that when you load a gamecube game, the wii loads a mios, and goes into gamecube mode. While in this mode wii features like usb harddrive, and other stuff become disabled.

you cant play NGC through USB because in gamecube mode all wii functions are disabled like the SD slot and USB.

I'm pretty sure that what is happening here is that the wii is more or less acting like it is using a gamecube emulator and a whole seperate system and bios. Even though this stuff is accessable, the wii virtually becomes a gamecube and the wii system is no longer accessable while this is going on. The wii uses a cios to run backups from disk or from usb which are components of the wii. The gamecube part uses a cmios and since the gamecube doesn't have usb ports, there is no way to load from them. I think someone could do it but they would have to trick the gamecube into thinking it was reading from disk and actually use the usb ports that don't exist.

This is all of coarse just a theory and i don't know for sure, but it is all that makes sense to me.

Sooner or later there will be a way of booting GC games from usb hard drive with a soft modded Wii, with hardmods threre is already a way to boot GC games from a hard drive. It's just a matter of time now. Somebody has already figured a way to boot WiiWare from a USB loader, so why not GameCube games from a USB Loader?

Thanks everyone for the answers as didn't really want to get flamed or feel dumb for this one. I haven't had to ask one question in getting everything to work just wanted to know why this was.

Makes perfect since and will jsut keep watching and waiting to see if it happens.

    Thanks again everyone

well this is something alot of us would like to see happen, especially now that the d2-3 chip is gonna eliminate backups from disks alltogether anyway. I always figure, if there is enough of a demand for something, it will probably happen.

I completely agree with this. I think the new chip will force this to happen. I have not run into this chip just yet with my modding but I am sure I will.

I have loved this site I have modded xbox's and 360's and just got into the wii so this is fun learning and this is a great community
