4.2u (softmod & update problems)

I have been searching for answers all over the forums but have not found any. I softmodded my 4.2u wii, bought in 2009. I used Messie's guide:

I got HBC, and the dvd and usb loaders installed, but cant get them to actually work. Now, I'm not too concerned with how to get them to work. If I can, great, but what i really want is to buy a couple games on the shop channel. It wants me to update, but I dont want to mess up the wii.

The only answer I really want is:

If i do a straight update from nintendo will it brick my wii, or just render HBC useless?
I would really appreciate some help on this, thanks in advance.

One of two things can happen:

If you have a heavily mod-ed Wii (Custom themed Wii Menu, Preloader and stuff.), you can end up with a bricked Wii.

If you just have a lightly mod-ed Wii (installed HBC and cIOS, and minor stuff.), the updates may remove all installed homebrew on the Wii. I'm not sure about the SD card though.
