Just softmodded, need help on next steps

    Hi all

Apologies if these questions have been asked before. I have been reading the forum and there are answers to some of my questions, but some of the posts are quite old and I'm still somewhat confused.

I've just followed this guide to softmod my 4.2E Wii:

Wii 4.2E softmod tutorial. Easy to follow guide.

Everything went according to plan except the part where I installed cIOS223[38+37]-v4.wad and I got "error! (ret = -1035)". However, the Homebrew channel appears to work properly so I'm not sure whether this is a problem or not.

I now want to try to copy all of my games from their original discs preferably to an SD card in the front Wii slot, or if that's not possible to a USB HDD. I've been trying to read up on the loaders, but I'm still confused. Please could somebody confirm how I do this? Can I rip the games to SD card and load from there? Or do I need to use a USB device? Is there an up-to-date guide on how I do either of these?

    Thanks in advance
    mash

You can't backup your original discs unless you have an LG drive (about 4 different types of LG and a few other manufacturers).

Your only option is to use downloaded backups.

Yes you can use a USB HDD drive, more information here http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...s-usb-hdd.html

Thanks for the link. That page suggests that the error means "incorrect or bad IOS/wad installations". I'm not really sure what that means. I just went back into the WAD Manager and tried to install it again, and I got error -1. The error list says that means CIOS isn't installed properly, but I followed the instructions to the letter

    @siphilips
Is there any way to identify which type of drive I have installed? I'm happy to download ISOs if I need to but would obviously be easier to rip straight from my own discs if possible. I will have a look at the HDD guide once I've got the WAD issue sorted.

Only way to find out is to try as many games as possible, or try a game that you know works on a friends softmodded Wii and try that same disc, on your Wii, if it doesn't work, you probably have got a d3-2 drive, and USB HDD is your only option of booting games.

Thank you very much. I've kicked off a download of a game I already own, so it can start downloading while I'm trying to sort the CIOS problem and read through the USB HDD tutorial.

Have clicked thanks for your posts

Well following the guide you linked to I downloaded USB Loader GX. I popped it on my 4GB SD card, and tried to follow the instructions included with it to install the required WADs. I got the same error -1. HOWEVER, I then just tried launching USB Loader GX and it successfully say my 16GB SD card attached by USB, and it is now ripping Resident Evil 4 to the SD card! I have no idea if it will actually launch due to the errors reported, but it's at 20% ripping already so I'll report back in about 10 minutes once it's finished.

It works! Thanks for the great link! I have no idea what all those errors mean when installing the WADs, but my rip of RE4 booted fine! Thanks so much This is a very friendly and helpful community.

I just have a couple more questions:

    1. Can I install the loader onto the Wii hard drive so I don't have to have it on an SD card?
    2. Can I make a channel on the main Wii home screen so I can go straight into the loader without having to go through the Homebrew channel?
    3. Can I get the loader to work with my SD card in the front slot rather than connected by USB? I'm guessing not since it's called USB loader, but thought I'd ask anyway
    4. Is it safe to use my soft-modded Wii online? Will Nintendo detect it and disable it like MS do with XBOXes?
