Wii Both Freezes and Won’t Recognize SD Cards

    Hello Wii Hacks!

I have a used Wii that I am trying to return to “normal” for resale.

This means that I need it to be updated to System Menu 4.2U, thus eliminating the hacks, to sell in good faith as working-used.

    Here’s the catch; it’s other problem is that it freezes at different points in the “Wii” corner menu, and always before I can finish getting the update from Nintendo. I’ve now got it to the point where it no longer has an SD Card option at the main menu, and won’t acknowledge or recognize cards when inserted. It won’t even show you the data that is on it in the “Data Management” menu, or in the “Channels” menu. Allow me to explain what I’ve done;

When I got this Wii originally, it had the freezing problem. I wanted to fix it for resale, be it a hardware issue, or software. While I don’t remember what System Menu it was originally, it was not 4.2, and I figured that a 4.2U update may fix the issue.

The freezing issue wouldn’t allow me to update despite the tens of times I’ve attempted it.

I then decided to update it to 4.2U using Firmware Updater 4.2.dol. While this was a success, it still failed to fix the freezing issue.

I then decided to Virgin my Wii as I now thought that it was a NAND issue as opposed to an update matter.
I then used 4.2 hacks to hack back in and “Any Region Changer” to successfully revert to 3.2U. However, after also messing around in “Any Title Deleter” I deleted all hacks and I now notice that the Wii no longer has an SD card menu at the main menu, and will not recognize or acknowledge one when inserted.

With no SD card readability, and no hacks installed, I’m basically dead in the water. In sum, I’m hoping someone can offer pointers to,...

*Get the Wii to read SD cards again.

    *Fix the freezing issue.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

What kind of SD card are you trying? SDHC cards(sd's larger than 2gb) don't work unless you have 4.0 or higher, and the sd card button on the main menu was only put in for 4.0 and higher aswell.

As for the freezing i have no idea

I don't suppose the random freezing could be due to something as simple as the air flow issue could it? Some months after the Wiis first came out reports of random freezing were popping up occasionally-these were not modded Wiis. Turned out in fair number of cases, the Wiis had semiblocked air ducts and just needed a cleaning.

The other possibility if you purchased the Wii as a used console with existing freezing problems is heat damage to the circuit boards. Not something you would have anticipated or can really address through software.

Thank you both for your timely and helpful responses!

    1. I am using a 2 Gig SD card (Non-HC). This card never gave me an issue with this machine before so I doubt that it’s that. Thanks for asking though!

    2. I did have it apart at one point and replaced the Wifi card, Wifi cords, and Wifi mini boards with the ones from another working Wii just to see if it was a Wifi related issue, as it would typically freeze during almost any internet related function. (Updates, Connection Settings, News, Weather, but not on on-line gaming). It still froze which told me that the freezing was not an internet or Wifi hardware related issue.
As far as the air ducts, where are those? I’d love to take it apart again and clean them out if only I knew where they were.

As far as the overheating issue, I don’t yet, but will soon have the capability to pull and reball the chip. I hope it’s not that, but I will do what I need to regardless. My next question is:

    *Where are the air ducts?

There's one on the right side (with the Wii in the horizontal position) and the one at the back where the fan is located. You sound like you are going to take the Wii apart, that's good because some people just blew a can of air at the Wii grills. You know those cans of air have some moisture in them so a few people created more problems down the line for themselves. I doubt that is your problem, but just on the offchance thought I would mention it.

You initially thought the freezing was related to Internet-you recall the old Internet Channel did cause that problem-you have updated that, right?

These intermittent problems are the worst to try to track down and fix; so good luck to you.

    Thank you once again!

Because I cannot update or read SD cards, I have no way of installing the Internet Channel, unless there is a way in through a 16 gig USB flash drive, which I have, or a Gamecube Memory Card, which I also have.

I will go ahead and take it apart and clean the air ducts. Once I have, I will report back with the results, fixed or not. Hopefully this will fix it before I get the equipment I will otherwise need. Thank you for your help in this. Will report back soon!
