Why should I not Update 3.4E to 4.2E

What is the reason behind the advice not to update using Ninteno's online update??
I have a friend with a 3.4E Wii and he wants to soft mod the wii. My Wii is 4.2E (out the box) and my other friends was 4.1E out the box. The 4.1E was updated online the second it came out the box to 4.2E and then softmodded and runs a treat.

Why should my other friend not update his 3.4E Online using Nintendo's Update other than the extra step to remove the IOS249 Stub in the 4.2 Soft Mod process??

It will wipe out your bootmii boot2 which is your best chance of recovering if your wii bricks.

So by updating to 4.2 the option to install BootMii as a Boot2 is lost?? I was under the impression that the ability to install BootMii to Boot2 was a hardware based issue rather than just a Firmware.

Looks like I leanred something new again

The boot2 sector is overwritten in the 4.2 update, but because of inaccuracies in N's code it doesn't always prevent Bootmii access the way it was intended to. This is why there are still 4.2 users with Bootmii as boot2.

But like emuhack said, go 4.1 and be merry.

So the only real reason is to Guarantee that BootMii can be installed as Boot2 and also for the easier Soft Mod?

Guess he needs to buy a 2GB SD card then, as the 4GB one I used for the 4.2's doesn't work. lol

The reasons include everything mentioned in this thread, including the stubs that will be installed, and in some cases the 4.2 update has bricked softmodded as well as unmodified virgin consoles.
