Question Noob in need of advice

I did a hard mod to my Wii using a drivekey modchip. I was lucky to get one of the last Wiis with a D3 nothing drive chip. All of my games seem to be working fine but when I try to play Super Mario Bros it wants to update my system before I can play it. I didn't want to update the system because after reading several posts it is discouraged. I am afraid that after I update it my backups will not work. My current system version is the stock version which is 3.4u. I assume that it would update it to 4.2u. I have read through a whole lot of threads but I just simply cannot find this information so I am just going to ask it. Does updating the system version cause for my backups to not work when using a drivekey modchip or am I safe to update ?

I read about Wii scrubber and Priiloader to allow you to boot the games without installing the updates but what I understood is that you need a softmod for those. I am trying to avoid doing a softmod if possible which is why I got the modchip. Is this correct ?

Gotta either softmod or run disk update, both of which will take you to 4.1

Question I guess a softmod it is then

Thanks for the reply. So I guess that means there is no way to do that using a modchip. Man, no wonder so few people use a modchip and instead go with a softmod...not to mention the softmod doesn't cost money.

I read through the post of softmodding any Wii 3.1 to 4.1. I guess if I do that then I can still play my backups using discs since my DVD drive is a D3 nothing, right?

Alot of ppl who have modchips turn around and softmod as well. You could get ahold of an external harddrive and loose the disks as well with that kind of process having been done.

Modchips are good if you have more dollars than sense lol. it is an easy way to go and doesn't require much patience or thought process. the softmod allowas for more control over system files and possibilities for other things. You can run the disk update, but don't run the official online update. That will take you to 4.1. Then sleep on it and if you want to prepare for the future and try other cool features, then look into softmodding, but there is no need for you to rush as you have all that you need.

    Question

Thanks again. I am under the impression that loading the isos from a USB drive is slower than reading from the discs. I know that reading from a drive is faster, but the data is packed into an image so the Wii has to read through an image file and I think that would make it slower than reading the unpacked data from a disc. Don't know if that's right but that's why I tried to use discs instead of isos. Is that not the case?

No sir the backup disks only read at half the speed as the normal wii disks, the harddrives can read as fast as the normal wii disks.

So if I run the disk update from Super Mario Brothers and it updates the system bersion to 4.1 will I still be able to play all of my existing backups ? You made a good point about doing that for now. If I could do that for now that would be great but I think it's clear to me now that softmodding will be the way to go. Thanks again.

Yes that is all you need to do for now to play your game and comfortably think of alternatives for the future. Just don't run the official online wii update or you'll be at 4.2 and softmodding will be a little more difficult.

your other disks should be fine as well.
