Follow the 3.1-4.1 guide in my sig below. You'll need to softmod the console to get it playing backups.

Oh and you were right to avoid youtube, the videos there on wii-hacking are full of fail.

Edit: Also, if the console is brand new there's a good chance it has a d3-2 drive which would prevent it from reading and playing backup discs. There's no workaround for this right now and you'd have to load from usb if that's the case. You can check your serial # against the list here to see.

You only need internet to upgrade your firmware in that guide, but there's also a method for updating offline if you decide to upgrade. For the cIOS installs choose WAD Installation, and make sure the .wad files you got from the download pack are in the root of your sd card.

No worries. Follow the guide from beginning to end, don't skip ahead, and do everything it instructs in order and you'll be fine. Read through first to familiarize yourself. And yes, HBC will come before you can install any wads.

Sometimes you have to estimate as no one's added information on a serial close to yours yet. Here's one close to yours. It's probably safe to assume your Wii is chipped, but if you want to be sure just try burning a few games and see if it takes. Other than that the only way to find out is to open up the console.

Would you like to share what this mysterious error was?

Never uninstall any IOS under 200, ever.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.
