Western Digitals work great for usb loading. Lots of people use the 500 and 1tb models. The usb powered passports are nice since they're small and there's only one cable. Amazon or newegg will probably give you the best prices.

There's also a compatibility list on the forum you can check to see what works and what doesn't.

The someone who told you that is an ... well for lack of a more derogatory term, they're very misinformed. Those drives work fine, external power supply or not. Check out the compatibility list.

Thanks I checked the list and I found the type I have, and I know this is probably a really lame question and I'm going to lie to you and tell you its my last question

The drive I have matches the 500gb WD My Book Essential but the last 3 letters are changed like that one says western digital WDBAAF000ABK and mine ends in EBK would this really make that much of a difference? Other than that it matches.

Yeah true heh, but its still unopened so i could return it and exchange it for a different model otherwise i would try it.

Sneaky if your using win7 or vista you really shouldnt use partition magic as it comes with its own version and can cause issues

yea it is kind of trial and error with these things. we really need more ppl to go to the list and post their findings, but you know how it is. even after we work so hard to help them, they never give that kind of feedback so we can add them to the list.
