    OK, sounds like a plain.

You do realize that you could softmod it in less than 30min, and be loading @ 8x speed from usb for free? Sounds like the wii is already in peaces, so not much to loss.

From your description, it sounds like you have a modchip. So you would want a drive that supports the chip, or your chip would not work. I would look at the site sponsors to see if they are selling replacement drives.

It installs some custom code that allows your wii to read games from a usb drive, and load backups from disk with a loader, if you had a disk drive.

OK, now I am just confused.
You say you don't have a modchip.
Your wii is disassembled on its side.
So, what are you doing with your wii?
If you don't have a chip, are you loading backups or just original disks?

OK, in that case any functional wii drive would work. I would keep an eye on ebay, search broken wii and buy the best deal you can, hope for the best.

On another note. Fair use laws (depending on local) allow you to backup your digital media, since it has a limited life in disk forum. So if you own X game you should have the right to put X game onto another dvd, or any suitable media allowing you to play it. In your case, this is where usb comes into play. You could follow one of the two guides linked below, and softmod your wii. Then copy an iso of your game over to a usb drive and play them without having a functional dvd drive. You would have to download your iso, since your drive is broken and you can't make your own, but that is acceptable.
