    updating my wii

hi guys. i just got another wii as i'm scared to brick my wii 4.2. the wii i got is a second hand one which is running on version 2.1e.

my questions are do i update it to a newer version, if so which version should i update it to. also how do i update it. do i go to the setting options on the wii and update via nintendo or is there another more sensible way.

thanks for the dumb questions but i am a newbie.

well the best versions currently are 4.1 and 3.2.
DO NOT do the update via nintendo cuz u will end up on 4.2
U could use an original disc and update with that. New Super mario bros has 4.1 update and dono which game has 3.2 so thats up to u to find out.

i didn't realise that you could update via games. how do i do that. i've got lots of games and can't say that i've noticed that before. is it not possible to download an update file and do it that way?

Go to the tutorial section and look for "what ios games use to run". Find a game that has an update. You would be better off using a game that updates to 3.1 or 3.2 and then use our guides to either update higher or softmod it with the firmware you have. I honestly wouldnt use the guides yet since they dont cover 2.1 firmwares and I would rather be safe than sorry. I would not though do a system update since that would place you at 4.2. If you want to softmod at 3.2, then use a game that will update you to 3.2 and then follow the guide on this site for 3.2 to softmod it. If you want to softmod at a higher version 4.0, or 4.1, then use a game stil with 3.2 update but then use the guide for 3.2 firmwares that will upgrade you to that newer firmware.
If I have helped you in any way, please thank me by pressing the little thanks button.

    ************ Updated Post 1-1-2010*********************
I have been reading conflicting reports thru out the forum

I semi bricked my Wii , i believe its semi bricked with 3.4 I have the WiiKey Chip installed.
if I get my hands on the NSTC of New Super Mario Bros. and let it update I should be back on track right ?? - *update* no longer semi bricked, NSMB fixed the semi brick issue

After the first update on NSMB it wants to run a system update again is this safe ?
I have read conflicting reports on the site that people say never run updates from the internet from Nintendo and other says if you have a chipped wii with the Wiikey this isn't a problem ?
Can anyone shed some light if updating over the net will cause a problem. Right now I have 4.1U firmware update from NSMB.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
