Scared of bricking again, need advise please.

I bricked my Wii not so long ago, FULL brick

I've bought a 2nd hand Wii thats running 3.3E. I still have my old DVD drive in my other Wii that's been modded using a Wiikey (Had no faults whatsoever with that)

I'd like the Homebrew channel again as it was a worthy expansion, but I'm scared of bricking it again. So I have some questions

1, Would it be worth swapping DVD drives so I have a backup reading DVD drive regardless of any softmod?

2, Do I update to anything newer BEFORE I begin the softmodding?

3, Do Nintendo detect mod chips now? If so, what are they doing about it, are they purposely bricking Wiis?

4, Why do people that mend shoes, also cut new keys?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

    1. Up to you. If you softmod the 3.3E Wii and go USB then you'll not likely need to run backups anyway.

    2. No 3.3 is a good starting point. You might be able to get bootmii/boot2 on your 2nd Wii, so you'll be protected from future full bricks.

    3. No, start at 3.3 and update during the process. http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...d-any-wii.html

    4. It's like asking why do fuel stations always stock Charcoal Briquettes and Firelighters. That's just the way it is.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

The softmod process updates 3.3 to 4.1 for installation of Priiloader. The first part of this is to install IOS60patched, then run firmware updater 4.1 which downloads and installs you with 4.1E.

Technically the update is only for Priiloader but it is included in the tutorial so at least everyone has some brick protection and some system hacks to make use of.
