Should connect24 ever be left on?

During my softmod I was instructed to keep it off and it is still off. Is there any harm or reason to leave it on? It would be nice to have the news and weather if there is no risk to my system :-).

The reason it's advised to leave off is so you don't take an online update and because it has heated up some consoles to the point of frying their mainboard and causing graphics decay. But it is needed for the channels you mentioned and going online with games.

If you have Priiloader installed you can disable online updates and not worry about it, turning Wiiconnect24 on when you need to. I have mine set to ignore standby mode, so that Wiiconnect24 turns on with my console and turns off when it powers down.

I was always under the impression that it was available for anyone, but being on 4.2 I didn't realize it's not a part of the hacks.ini for earlier fw's. Walking someone else through preloader I found the block update option is only for 4.2 users. This includes Startpatch as well.
