New Wii or an Old Wii?

Hey there. I am going to pick up a new Wii. However, I think I am going to trade it with my buddy (no interest in hack/homebrew at all) that bought his in the middle of ‘08, since it won’t have the D3-2 drive.

My questions: 1) Is the hard drive method of USB Loader GX somehow superior to using USB Loader GX to load a DVD-R? Are there reasons to not want to use the DVD-R method? 2) I know my buddy hasn’t updated System Menu recently – should I update before I hack it or leave it alone?

You should try to get as old a wii as possible. the harddrive allows for faster playback speed as well as smaller file sizes and the ease of use, not having to deal with disks.

okay. if i'm getting a hdd anyway, what's the advantage to having the older wii (if GC games aren't really a factor?)

Just like to keep options open as far as loading. If it is old enough and not updated to 4.2, you can take advantage of a vulnerability to boot to a program that can save and restore the info (nand) of the wii file system and memory, before the system menu boots.

Not necessarily, programs like preloader can work for 3.2, 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2. You'll want to avoid 4.2 if possible. Our 3.1-4.1 guide will walk you through the update to 4.1 if you are on a system menu not mentioned.

Lol, We end up having to bail ppl out all the time that follow that guide. We have guides here and plenty of ppl who are familiar with them to help you out if you get stuck.
