New Wii out of the box, did I destroy it?

Well, I think I've got myself into something I may not be able to undo. I'm going to do my best to explain what I've done but there is no way I'll be able to include it all as I started getting a little pissed and was trying some random things.

Brand new Wii never been used before. Opened the box, checked that I had 4.0U. Played Wii sports for a bit just to show the wife what it was all about. This Wii is for our kids for Christmas. We bought Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers and New Mario Brothers.

I then put in New Mario Brothers and when I went to play it, it said I needed to update my system to 4.1. I assume this is including on the New Mario Brothers Disc because I didn't have an internet connection when I did this update. Now, I updated, restarted the Wii, seen that the version indeed was 4.1U and the game worked fine.

Now keep in mind, I have not configured anything on the Wii really except for the time and such. Set a parental password and have not turned the internet or WiiConnect24 on.

The guide I was given was:
    Homebrew setup - WiiBrew

I was told that if I followed this guide carefully (very easy) I would be able to play dvd backups. Obviously I didn't research this far enough as this is only to load the homebrew channel to the Wii.

Now, homebrew channel was installed flawwlessly. I did a NAND backup to my 2gb SD card and have that backed up on my PC.

After that I found out there was more I had to install, I rushed into it. I got an app on my SD card called NeoGamma. Apparently this is a backup disc loader. The problem is, when I went to run it, it said I was missing 2 different cIOS files. I know one was 249 and the other I'm unsure. My pc and Wii are hooked to the same TV and it's pretty bad going back and forth reading and following instructions.

So, I proceeded to try just about every app I could. I know this is wrong and I'm just happy at this point the Wii still plays normal games.

I did the trucha bug restorer and the instructions I had wasn't really clear that I had to install from network so I was getting some errors from the SD card. Downgrade, downgrade, upgrade and so on.

Here is where I think I really screwed up. I had a friend walk me through an app called AnyTitleDeleter. He was having me delete all sorts of things (he was following a guide) Everytime I deleted something, it said there was an error and the guide said it would do that but it was still fine. Now, that seems weird to me but I was pretty sure he wouldn't lead me wrong. I then decided to update to 4.2 as I thought that would get rid of everything I did. Wrong. So wrong. It updated no problem to 4.2 but the homebrew channel was still on it. No clue why it didn't get deleted. After hours of trying to get this cIOS thing installed, I gave up. I formatted the system memory of the Wii, again, the worse thing I can do after I read.

So I have a 4.2 system with all sorts of things I likely can't undo. Retail games still work but I don't think I can undo what I have done. Just got off the phone with where I bought it from and I think they will switch it out for a new one. Should I do this? If I do and get a new one, what thread should I start reading. I assume the new one I get will be a 4.0U system. Is that my best route?

Sorry for the rambling. Typing my thoughts into words was never something I was good at.

Ok well you should be able to softmod the wii still... but with a little more difficulty... if i were you, go back and tell them it did not play right and get a new one...(dont tell them you try to mod it) then either wait till after christmas to mod it or use the guides in my sig to mod (make sure you pick the correct one according to your sys menu)...

and my suggestion is print the guides and then read read read then mod...

I must say I'm surprised you didn't brick it running random things and running through AnyTitleDeleter. You said you did an NAND backup. Do you know if BootMii was installed as boot2 or as an IOS? If it is installed as boot2, you should see 2 quick flashes from the drive slot LED when you start up the Wii. If you have BootMii/boot2 you might consider restoring your NAND and starting over from that point.

But I must say, I don't know if there's anything that CAN'T be undone through homebrew...that is, unless you brick it.

2 quick somewhat positive replies sure makes me happy.

Pretty sure I'm going to take it back and get a replacement for it and start fresh and then read read read until my eyes fall out of their sockets.

Yes, I did the backup with boot2 as an IOS whatever that actually means I don't know. I did the 4.2 update after though so I'm not sure if my NAND backup is good anymore.

I think I'll try to take it back before trying to undo the mayhem first and if I can't, then I'll try fixing it.

Thanks again for the quick replies. I am determined to get this working for the kids and start building a game library.

Also when you get the new wii - invest in a WD HDD and do usb loading... much easier to maintain your library of games and it works better in my opinion... and also i would not upgrade past 4.1, unless the new wii that you are going to try to get already has 4.2...

let us know how it goes...

I would just give the 4.2 guide a whirl. And he would have homebrew still on it although since the 4.2 update installs a stubIOS249, the homebrew would not work anymore.

After I did the Nintendo update via the net and went to 4.2, homebrew was still on there which I was surprised. That's when I started trying all sorts of stuff with the DeleteAnyTitle app. Finally, I formatted the Wii and the channel was gone. I tried quite a bit after that to get it back on with no success. I tried the banner bomb v2 and none of the files worked: The first few files just froze the system when I put the SD Card in and all the others loaded to a "?" mark file.
