    Updated 3.4u to 4.2u

newbie here, first post actually. i know this is probably posted somewhere, and i apologize in advance, but i just bought this wii today, brand new, and it was 3.4, not modded or anything. not thinking about it, i updated it, now it is 4.2u. i have been reading a ton and watching every youtube vid i can to try to figure out either how to mod or how to downgrade so i can mod. what can i do here? i read the entire full hacking guide on here, but it says its only for systems already on 4.2, and we will have to wait for a downgrade to come out. what can i do? all i want to do is play my backed up games? please help.
    thanks,

As you're new, here are the Forum Rules to check out. See the Wiihacks Index Page for important threads which will probably answer most of your questions.

4.2 is very hackable and as of now there is no real safe way to downgrade without having a serious chance to brick your Wii. Just follow the 4.2 guide linked in my signature below - it's current and up to date with everything you need to play backups.

If your Wii is brand new there's a strong chance it contains the D3-2 chip which prevents the drive from reading backup discs. There is no workaround yet, so you'll be limited to usb loading if this is the case.

Edit: And above all - Don't follow youtube video tutorials! Stick to this site - everything you need is here.

that is what i used, was your full hacking guide. i just didnt know if it would work because of what you put in there about it not working if you updated,

"Waninkoko's 4.2 SAFE updater is already out here, but it is not recommended that you update to 4.2 anyway. An online update will remove any cios you had on the wii!! You will lose the ability to play backups and load through usb! this is only for those who are already on 4.2.
Also, no way to downgrade for now, so hang in there."

so i didnt know. but, i just tried it, and used your guide, and just now put in one of my backed up games, and it worked. so, i guess im back in business!!! i really appreciate your tutorial! thank you for getting back with me so quick!

Just to clarify, that's Messie's guide - I don't claim to be that good at Wii hacking yet.

Good deal you got it going. That disclaimer about updating applies mostly to people who already have modifications present on their consoles. As you hadn't hacked your Wii prior to updating there was nothing to worry about. Cheers.

oh, ok. i gotcha. the only probs i ran into was in the guide, it kept saying to download and install the first file, then do whatever, then after that, to format the card, and download and install the next file, and install that. i tried to do it that way, formatting the card, and it wouldnt work, homebrew was blank with nothing there. so i would just download the next file, and drag and drop them onto the sd card. of course it would ask me to replace existing files or whatever with the new one, so i would just keep clicking yes and so on and so on. anyways it worked.

this wii is brand new, but it was wierd how i got it. i got on CL this morn, and a lady was selling it, brand new in box, with extra remote and nunchuck for 150. i jumped on it. she got it by ordering papa johns pizza, when she was ordering, an ad popped up for her to enter for a chance to win a wii, so she did. and she won!! so she just got it not too long ago, not for sure how long papa johns or whatever had it prior, but it did come with the 3.4 firmware, so i guess im lucky it wasnt newer than that as far as the chip goes or whatever!!

I remember that Papa Johns contest from a while back, I didn't think people actually won those things. That's a crazy good deal on a new Wii, plus with the extra remote/nunchuck you probably saved over $100 on the full retail price. Very lucky indeed.

All I can say is to not listen to YouTube turorials and follow the directions here on the site. 4.2 is very hackable and you do not have to downgrade.

Okay, thought it was working?? My first game worked, but I tried two others this morn, one gave me no disk error, the other said code dump, then a whole bunch of stuff on screen, and froze?? Bad disks or games maybe?
