Softmod or ModChip is stressing me out ;-(

Hi,

I have a 2006 Wii which i want to be able to play backed up games. My little one has already been through two mario kart's and no way i'm carrying on like this.

I want it to be able to play all the new games ie New Super Mario Bros.

I just can't find simple answers whether the softmod is better or modchip. I can't solder to even save mylife so prefer the softmod.

What is better for me? I don't really understand all these homebrews etc. I just want to be able to softmod it and job done.

well ur wii is old so u will have no problems softmodding it. U will be able to play backups and NSMB. If u ask me, i would just softmod it.

I'm pretty new to this myself, but I would say go with a solderless modchip. There are some that are now being shipped with the capability to play the new SMB. I am using a d2pro9 solderless chip and I think its great. The only downside is it currently doesn't play the new SMB or other games with the same type of protection. But may with an update in the near future. I am not a fan of softmods, but many do run them with little or no isssues.

Check out the modchip subforum and you'll find tons of info on which chips have been updated to play the latest games.

I.M.O. softmod is the way to go oltherwise everytime you get new games released with new security you have to wait on the manufacterer to release updates when the softmod guys always have there fixes first i have softmodded many wiis and truly believe it is the best way to go plus why would you pay for a chip to do something you can do for free?

I would softmod and depending on the current sys menu that you have use the links in my sig to find the tut that fits your needs.... My advice though is to read the entire tut before you mod (twice lol)...

i don't think i've ever updated my wii or might have done when mario kart was released.

1. i only have a 1gd SD card. Is this ok as i also want to back up the nand?
2. i don't have a gamecube controller. can't i use the wii controller?
3. I have 3.2e system menu. How do i update the system menu version as i don't want to update to v4.2?
4. how do i know if i have 250 blocks free?
5. that it for now :o

Answers:

1. yes NAND backup is usually about 525mb (mine was that)
2. i think so but gamecube is better
3. look in my sig for dogeggs guide (mod from there)
4. click on the wii icon in the bottom left corner of the main screen of the wii and go into data managment - it will then show you how many blocks you have free.

2. If you are referring to getting around in BootMii when doing the nand backup, you can use the power and reset buttons on the Wii console to navigate if you do not have a gamecube controller.
