Gotta say mauifrog, awesome job helping this guy out! You've definitely stuck with this issue.
Yeah man. Big up to you. It was better than a soap opera.
Well done for sticking with it. Respect is due to you mauifrog.
Seems to me there's a lot of HARD TO UNDERSTAND/MISINFORMATION regarding updating/soft modding/chipping/unbricking Wii's out there in cyberland and a lot of MISHAPS from NEWBIES when trying to do these things.
Firstly I MYSELF AM A NEWBIE and unfortunately after much research I DO think i will need to get my Wii's NAND FLASHED, Hopefully i am WRONG.
i HAD a USA 3.1 NTSC Wii.
i live in Australia (pal) - got this USA Wii from overseas.(Brand New given to us as a gift last November)
Due to me living in AUS, the USA wii with the 6 games was not going to be very useful due to everything here being PAL if i didn't either -
a. softmod it or
b. get a chip installed.
So i TRIED to softmod it after doing lots of research on the Wiibrew forum website, HBC website and another website (unfortunately not this website), and reading many a persons bricking problem with system updating chip-modded Wii's.
I couldn't get Anyregionchanger to work initially but have since realized i had no 'bug' installed in an ios.
Somehow after a week of solid research i managed to get start-patch to work and so was able to play PAL games...HOORAY.
So i got Wii Fit Plus for my wife for Christmas and it wanted to update the console.
Well after much more research I realized if i used the Disc update i would brick my Wii (Wii System = U : Disc = E )
So what does a NEWBIE do?
I read everywhere not to update from any source other than the Nintendo website or a game disc, i have no NTSC disc wanting a system update, so all i can then think of is to update via the Nintendo server...remember i live in Australia so short of buying a latest game from America i have no other way to update this Wii, and hadn't researched enough then to know of the other homebrew programs that can Skip Disc Updates.
WHAT A DISASTER THAT IDEA WAS.
Sure it updated to 4.2U
Sure i could still play the NTSC games.
AND VERY WEIRDLY THE HBC CHANNEL WAS NOT ERASED WITH THE UPDATE
UNFORTUNATELY BootMii would ONLY install as an IOS (this is my problem i feel)
With the update done, no longer would Start-patch work, and i DID try priloader but that also wouldn't work.
So i was once again stuck with a non-viable Wii.(only 6 NTSC GAMES living in AUS)
OBVIOUSLY due to the system now being v4.2U I was unable to install start-patch and hadn't heard of Neogamma then. and the priloader update was no good either.
WOW...what a headache, i was about to throw my wii out the window.
So i persevered with yet MORE research to try to get the bug working.
After yet MORE research i was able to LEARN and SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL bug to ios36
FANTASTIC everyone says, problem solved...not quite.
Due to the 'misinformation'/hard to understand info on the various Wii Forums (mainly Wiibrew) i still couldn't workout how to get this bug to do what i wanted it to do.. IE. get my pal games working.
Now i did something SMART. Although i only had BootMii installed as an ios, i decided it wouldn't hurt to make a NAND BACKUP of my newly installed bug BEFORE i did anything more.
THIS I DID...I still have it on my PC, a complete NAND backup, a Bootmii.ini file and the armboot.bin file, ppcboot.elf etc
I then decided to downgrade the system menu using Anyregionchanger, but instead of downgrading to v3.2U (LIKE I SHOULD HAVE), i instead downgraded to v4.1U as i had read LOTS of reasons for having v4.1...NO i DID NOT downgrade to v4.1E, i downgraded to v4.1U because i wanted to be sure it worked and didn't want it to get region bricked as i had read that can also happen.
WHAT A BAD MISTAKE...ios60 (v4.1 system menu) is STUBBED when v4.2 is installed and needs to be unstubbed.
i FAILED to reinstall this system menu's ios after the downgrade (are you meant to?) and so i ASSUME that my BLACK SCREEN/BRICKED Wii is 'trying' to load a STUBBED system menu.
Here in Australia we DO have access to the SaveMii dongle and as we Aussies tend to 'help a mate out', the vendor near where i live suggested to me that if i took my Wii to him, we could see if the dongle would make a difference, if it would grant me access to the maintenance area, and if it did i would purchase it, and if it didn't help i wasn't then spending money on a useless item.
i ASSUME the SaveMii dongle ONLY works in port4....or will u ALWAYS get the version number in the bottom corner but to do so requires the dongle/GC controller in EITHER port 1 or 4.....i ask this as he ONLY tried the single port with no success.
It DOES say on the SaveMii website it only works in port4, but if it works the same as a homemade GC controller then using logic i would 'assume' that the SaveMii dongle may work in port1.
If i can get access to BootMii i will then be able to run my NAND backup.
Although as i said earlier, i 'think' i will have to wait for someone to flash the Wii's nand with the backup i have.
That is the end of my FABLE....
CAN A HERO HELP?
As i have a LARGE family (9 children) we bought another AUSSIE Wii (OUCH)
So if i can get this working it will help alleviate the squabbles of who's turn is it next.
Thanks for your time reading my post
Have a GREAT DAY
WOW.... you might wanna just edit that a tad bit. We don't need to know the whole entire life story of the wii. All need is the the important stuff. So if people don't wanna read all of that, here is a breif summary. Live in AUS with NTSC-U wii. System menu 3.1 but did an online update to 4.2U. HAD priiloader installed with bootmii as IOS and a NAND backup. Tried to downgrade to 4.1U without trying to remove the stub. Manage to get a bug on IOS36.
Come to the Irc room to get help or just have fun
Motivation alone is not enough. If you have an idiot and you motivate him, now you have a motivated idiot.
Unless you installed bootmii to boot2, not ios you can not fix this wii.
The only way to fix it without boot2 bootmii is to flash your nand backup back to the nand with a nand programmer.
Read this, it has some links to info regarding nand programing.
OH SH*T: Black Screen of WII!!!
As for ios60, yes, you should have installed it before installing SM 4.1.
For your new wii, follow one of the two guides linked below.
And read this-
Brick Prevention- Things you should never do

Warning: Piracy is NOT supported. Word your questions carefully.
I 'had' thought my only option now was to flash the nand...Thanks for confirming this
and thanks for your other input, i purchased a pre-softmodded aussie wii and it has ios249 patched and neogamma installed so my new wii should have no problems, although the person that modded this wii has also only installed bootmii as an ios....it seems this might be the greatest problem for us all, most new wii's will only install bootmii as an ios....
Anyways...again thanks for your time reading my post and your quick reply..
have a GREAT day
I realized I installed preloader on 4.1u can I fix the wii shop banner by updating to 4.2 or will it uninstall all homebrew and brick my wii even more?
I don't know, what is wrong with the wii shop banner? You don't need to update online.

When I start my wii (in maintance mode) the wii shop channel banner is white. When i click on the channel it shows the Start and Wii menu buttons along with shopping bag animation. But if i boot up normally it freezes at right before showing the wii menu. I think it's a banner brick but is the wii shop channel the problem?
P.S. Thank you so much for sticking with me with my wii problem.
