Easiest way to tell if I have D3-2

I just got a Wii, haven't even unboxed yet. It is a LU66 and the database tells me I have a 25% of a D3-2.

Is there anyway to tell what drive I'd installed without a full soft mod, or taking it apart? I'm looking to hard mod with the exception of HBC for emulators. Will throwing in a burnt DVD movie give me any info as to the drive, or would it just error either way?

I'm trying to find out if I can use a conventional chip, or should go with a WODE if I do have a D3-2. Thanks!

sorry but odds and chances are not something i like to deal in. the only advice i can give to ppl is. try to by an older wii, if you buy a new one the risk gets higher everyday on getting stuck with that d2-3 chip. if you can't find the info from that database, you can only try the softmod or hard mod to know for sure. right now the modchip world is moving toward finding a solution for this chip but nothing is certain yet.

I just had a thought. If I install dvdx, and it will read a burned DVD movie will this give me an answer, or are burned movies compatible with all drives including the D3-2?

You will still need to softmod it as you will need MPlayer to play the DVD. All you would have to do is install DVDx along with the homeBrew Channel. Then find yourself a version of MPlayer. The Wii by itself cannot play DVDs. DVDx is just so the system can "see" the burnt DVD, you would still need a way to "play" said DVD.

Is there a specified reason that you want to hard mod the WII... if you read the forums a lot of people are going to USB Loading - because you get better read rates from USB then the DVD-R Backups.... What i would do is not worry about the D3-2 Chip and just soft-mod the WII and USB Load everything...

The primary user will be my young son so I'm looking to hard mod for ease of use.

There is actually programs out there to make channel - links to games that are on your WFBS drive and it is as simple as clicking the game that you want and it will load... that is what i have for my 4yr old and he loves it... (i do to because i dont have to worry about the DVD-R getting scratched and me having to burn them over and over)

    just a thought
