New virgin Wii, should I update?

I'm getting a new Wii for Christmas, and I'm planning on softmodding right away. I have read the tutorials advising to not upgrade, but I am unclear if this if for any Wii, or just already modded ones.

So, my question is, should I update out of the box before doing any mods and then follow the proper tutorial, of should I just mod right away without any updates from Nintendo? Also, is 4.0 the highest I will see with a brand new system, or could it already be updated higher? Thanks!

ok lets make it more clear. if you update a modded wii it will undo the modification and possibly brick it.
if you update an unmodified wii it will be even more difficult to modify it.

Also, since it is so new it might have a new chipset that prevents loading backups from discs. Just fyi. You will be able to load from usb if that is the case though

I read about the d3-2 drive. I bought a wii back in early november brand new from Wal-mart. I was successfully able to mod it and was able to play burned dvds so im assuming it did not have that drive. Had to return it due to financial problems though. I am planning on buying a new one tonight but I read about the d3-2 drive and am a little worried now. I read that all black wii's have the d3-2 drive but not necessarily white wii's. Is this true? Whats the chances I'm gonna mod this thing and not be able to play my burnt dvds cuz I don't have the cash for a usb drive currently...

Two friends of mine just got used wiis. They're cheaper, don't have the new chip, and could even load bootmii as boot2. I would consider that

everyone keeps asking about odds and chances. the thing is in russian roulette, there is one bullet and six chambers. even though the odds are 1 out of 6, i'm not gonna do it. if i were you i buy a second hand wii as old as possible. there is no way to know what is going on with wii and its distribution of it's products. we know the chips are out there and we know some ppl end up with them and some don't

Well, I would do that but there realy are no places near by that sell used wii's. Already checked today in town to save some cash. New wii is about the only option I have. I just saw a post in another forum where someone beleived the d3-2 was not released in the USA. Is that true? Since I bought my first wii brand new in early november and the d3-2 drive has been around for a while it seems, I would hope that they wouldn't have em a month later only...
