Question about VC and WII Ware Wads

Can WII Ware and VC wads be played off of a wbfs drive or must they be installed as channels?

You will have to install them as channels and play them via the SD channel or using Triforce through the SD. [i'm not 100% sure if you can use a hdd with triforce yet, so I think you are stuck with SD or Wii VC/WiiWare loading]. And they would most likely never be able to be played from a WBFS drive, thats for Wii ISOs only.

Should I just use IOS249 (as in default) in WAD manager? Is there a guide/tutorial about what the WAD manager does and what the options are?

    Thanks.

Yes just use IOS249 and have wad manager run with it. Wad manager is just an installer for the wads [think .exe files but for the Wii]. Wad Manager can also un-install wads as well, as long as you have the wad in the wad folder on the SD, instead of "install wad" you would just hit left or right on the d-pad to select "uninstall wad". Although the best way to delete wads or anything else for that matter, is to use AnyTitleDeleter. But be careful with it, cause you can accidentally delete IOSs. And any IOSs that are double digits [ie IOS36 IOS55, etc etc] can brick your system.

Also just so you know about putting VC/WiiWare games on your SD and running them through it. When you load a VC/WiiWare game onto your SD and run it, it will temporarily write itself to the Wii's NAND. After you are done playing the game, and return to the Wii Menu, it will erase the temp write from the NAND. This constant reading and writing to your NAND can detrimentally mess up your NAND as it will create bad blocks after a while. The Wii can have up to 80 bad blocks, but anymore than that you will run into problems. This is why Triforce is the recommended way of running VC/WiiWare from SD as it doesn't use the Wiis NAND, but a dump of the NAND on the SD to emulate the Wii NAND system.

Hence why I said be careful with it. And it's the only way to completely uninstall all traces of any wads that were on the system. Just deleting the channel through the Wii Channel and using wad manager can still leave traces of it behind.
