Purchasing new Wii. Chipsets, dates, batches etc to avoid please?

    Hello

In the process of purchasing a new wii and plan to softmod, however are there any chipsets, manufacture dates, batches etc I should try to avoid please?

I take it the new black editions are a no go?

I would highly recommend trying to find an older wii. If you're in the U.S. look at places like the flea market. My friend found an old wii that had 3.4 system menu on it with 2 remotes for $125. Avoid wiis with serials that are LU64 or higher. If you get a brand new wii, chances are you will have the evil dvd drive in it that can not read burnt discs. Happy Hunting!

there are some to avoid for dvd backup. there is no current way to get them to work for playing backups from the disk drives. they can still be modified and used to play backups from usb devices. use the link and see if the serial numbers fall into the D3-2 under the dvd drive chip catagory. this is all the info known at this time so it will make purchase difficult unless you can see the serial numbers, or return them until you get a good one.

Thanks guys. So any thing other than D3-2, I will be able to soft mod and use DVD backups, correct?

Any idea when the D3-2 started to appear?

Correct. Also avoid anything with a serial number of LU64+ if you can.

The evil chip first emerged about 5 full moons ago. (I have no idea. Recently)

LU64+ models don't matter anymore, they can still be modded. They mainly started coming around in droves when they released the Limited Edition Black Wiis. And the person who had the chipset database in their sig was dark9ngel [I hope thats the spelling, if not I'm sorry], I've used it quite a bit too, I love it.
