What's the deal with .wad files. i've read so much about these and i'm still not sure what they are or what they do. Anyone possibly explain to me what they are?

.wad files are channels. they can be installed using a wad manager if you have the correct cios installed. and they install a channel onto the system menu. such items include wii-ware and VC games.

They're like the Wii's version of a .exe file. Installed through an app called Wad Manager, they perform functions ranging from installing system files to installing game channels. Placed in the /wad folder of an SD card.

Check out the links in my sig. All the info you're looking for is in them. Use whichever of the top two has your firmware, and definitely the third.

The short answer to your question is both.

one other thing i am wondering is with a normal wii you get the channel menu i guess you call it...now after you mod it, whether it be hard or softmodded, does it still load up the same and you just choose the HB channel from that same menu??

Yep. After it's softmodded HBC will show up as a new channel. Softmodding is also the method used to get HBC. Hardmods do not include this.
