Question Chip modded Wii and New Super Mario Bro & 4.2 update

Think I already know the answer from reading a lot about the system 4.2 update but just in case.....
I bought a modded Wii last year from a gu that said it was done in HK. All games work including back-ups. Bought Super Mario Bros today and get prompted for System Update 4.2. Didn't do it. turned off wireless to see if it would help, no dice. I believe a lot of the backup games that came with the system are from Japan so the region code issue is worrisome to me.
Is there a way to backup the Wii and 'try' the 4.2 update? Should I open the console to find out which chip it has? shoudl I return Super Mario Bros and be happy with what I've got? I do not use Homebrew.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Once the 4.2 update is done, there is no way as of yet, to safely go back. I heard there is a downgrader out, but that it can brick Wiis.

are u sure that wii came fm hk is truely a Jpn console, a Usa console, or a Korean-modded-to-Usa console ?
the last one will brick if u update with a retail NSMB disc in States/UK ! for sure.

check the serial number on Wii side will give u some idea. Or, check the Wii manual.

Sorry, I just looked at the paperwork. The Wii was purchased at Amazon.com and on a business trip the previous owner had it modded in HK. Had it since last December and its working perfect with any disc I put in....hate to ruin that.

NSMB has the 4.1 system menu.

Will the system update from the disc automatically update to version 4.2 or are you saying running the update from the disc instead of the internet will update my Wii to 4.1 which is ok?

    Thanks in advance,

disc update from NSMB is 4.1

    Update from Network is 4.2

Updating a softmodded wii form a disc is NOT a good idea.

Just install the missing IOS (int the NSMB guide) and it will stop asking.

    Thanks Davepm,

Just so the clueless on this end understand. I can run the disc update that comes with NSMB without modifying anything on my system and it will still be able to read all types of discs because the update on the disc is only 4.1. It is the network upgrade to 4.2 that hoses everything correct?

I double check since otherwise I will have a 6yr old ready to bury me in the backyard

Thanks so much for all your help.

Upgrading at all is never a good idea. Unless for some reason you want to go to 4.1 then use Waninkokos SAFE 4.1 updater.

My Wii has a wiikey. The wii system version that I have is 4.1U

How can I play the game (New Super Mario) without system update? There is a way to delete the need of update from the ISO after the burn process?

    Thank you.
