    Post USB powered HD?

forgive me if i'm posting in the wrong place, but i guess anything goes in the noob forum!

got USB Loader GX working and very happy. just need a better external HD solution. been looking at the Samsung S2 500GB. really like the look of it, but apparently it needs 0.85A from a USB port to work. two questions:

    1. what sort of power output will a wii usb port give me? cant find a spec with that kind of detail anywhere.

    2. can i use different partitions on it? i'd like a WBFS partition, a HFS+ partition for HD films (xbox) and maybe another partition for normal file stuff

    cheers

HI- I have the 500gb Samsung S2. Formatted fine in WBFS man 3 added games also have 120gb fat32 partition on it.
All games added great, launch USB loader (latest ver along with CIOS R14 and all the trimmings) and USB loader says 0 games. Can browse the FAT32 partition though with USB loader so there must be enough power to it.
Anyone got this HD working or have a fix?
Cant believe I bought 3 of these for friends totally trusting the Wiki disk compatibility list which is now incidentally down for maintenance:-(?

    Ahhhhh thats better.
    Sussed it out!
It's USB Loader GX that is the issue. Loaded up Configurable USB Loader and it works like a dream - in fact its a lot better to tell the truth!!
    Job done.

    Hey Trevez

Got one of these Samsung S2 HD too but no luck what so ever even with Configurable USB Loader. The Wii crashes "stack dump" when I click on Homebrew Channel. Can you tell me what firmware is on your Wii and what version of CIOS R14?

    Thanks

Thanks for quick reply but that's the same tutorial & files that I used. It works for LG, Seagate GO, Verbatim drives but just not this Samsung S2 drive. Maybe because of it's inbuilt USB chipset.

By the way what firmware is on your Wii? How old is your Wii?

im pretty sure that usb ports are limited to 500ma or .5a. Also as soon as i get the parts i am going to make a relay circuit that uses the other usb port to turn on the a/c adapter for my hdd(i am using a computer hdd in a enclosure so it never suspends it just idles) I will try to make a somewhat detailed how to on this

If you followed the same tut then you'd be on the "safe" 4.1 f/w upgrade like the 3 I've done. I've done this on 3 different Wii's of varied age, one was brand new but on 3.3E out of the box all work perfectly with the S2 500gb with Configurable USB Loader, but dont work with USB Loader GX.
I run Config USB loader thru HBrew & via the channell forwarder with no issues.
