Start off on following the guide in my signature for your wii version. That will get you caught up and softmodded as well.

it would be the best coarse of action to get you to play the newer games in concert with your modchip as well as get you on the same page to better interact with what's going on in this community as far as the other guides for the particular games and future games.

That file is the one that will update you to 4.1. The newest system menu is 4.2 and should be avoided at all costs because it will kill homebrew, so NEVER do any official nintendo updates. Here's the order you need to do things...

If you did steps 1-3 in order, next you install the patched ios60.
Then you install the 4.1 updater which will bring you up to system menu 4.1
Finally, you install preloader. BE SURE TO DO THESE STEPS IN ORDER.

Were you able to install bootmii as boot2 or only as an ios? If you were able to install it as boot2 a NAD backup should be made right away. Boot2 with a nad backup will make your wii 99.9% unbrickable.

did you not already install bootmii? That was one of the first steps in the guide. If you haven't do that first... Or did I miss what you were trying to say?
