    First time hacking a wii

Hi guys I got a wii a few weeks ago and found it can't play DVD's after a little research I found out what I needed to do, I have hacked a PSP and jail broken an ipod touch but this is my first time trying to hack a console I have

virgin wii 4.2 (yes I updated when I knew even less then I do now)
    2 gig SD card
it was new 2-3 weeks ago I have read there is a new chip set that stops it from reading DVD's even when hacked (is there a way I can tell what chipset I have with out cracking the case?)
if I do have this chipset I understand I can use a portable harddrive via the USB can I stream media from that or just games?

And last but definitely not least any advice you have that would be help full or the best and quite easy to follow 4.2 guide you know about (I have seen so many and have no idea which is the best)

thanks in advance for the help guys and girls

    - Drew (the newbie)

First, it seems you read a bit, and you have done some similar stuff before, and that's a good thing, but be sure to read updated info, since the wii scene is rapidly changing

you could check the link in my signature for a Complete softmod guide, but this is not a do this then that guide... this is one where you learn a bit while you do it, and why

It's constantly updated as a team effort.

And also, check out wiibrew.org for some hints on what your wii can do

If you partition your disc correctly, it can contain anything you want, and there's homebrew for things like playing movies, music, viewing pictures, streaming video from ftp, or over smb. Just keep in mind that the wii is a bit limited, since there's no HD capabillities.

Svin, you shouldn't confuse this person by linking to other guides from other sites here. They are here for a reason, and that reason is usually because our guides on this site are written by specific qualified MODS who know exactly what they are doing.

IIIDrewIII just start in the Tutorials Section and read all the information you can until you are comfortable in what you are doing.

Am I confusing people by linking to guides superior to other guides?

No offence, but this is by far one of the best guides I have seen
