    Softmod 101

OK I am trying to psych myself up to try the mod. I am scarred of bricking my wii as my kids play it every day. If I jack it up I will feel terrible and will have to buy a new one with money I don't have.

    BTW.....I am running 4.2U

That being said...I am trying to make this idiot proof for me to make sure I am thinking correctly. Here is what I understand I need to do. Please tell me if I am close:

    1. Copy the Homebrew files to SD card. (Done)
    2. Install HB, DVD, & Bootmii (what are the bricking %'s of this)
    3. Find a USB loader program so I can put games on a Stick or USB external.
    4. Load this how??????
    5. Find games, where?
    6. Copy to usb device
    7. play games, how?

Am I close here?? and what should my bricking confidence be?

Firstly what system firmware are you on.
    Do not update to 4.2.
If it has not been modded use this guide.

If you are starting from scratch, new 3.1-4.1 written by Dogeggs

Read it and let me know if there is anything you don't understand.

OK its just a bit more to do.

    Use this guide.

if you are already on 4.2, complete 4.2 guide written by Messie

Initially you will need a standard SD card, preferably sandisk 2GB, formatted as FAT32.

Read it carefully and you will be fine.

OK I took the initial leap. I installed the Homebrew and DVDx, I am unable to do a backup at tis point because I don't have a controller.

I think my next step is to load the cIos right? this is the part that really makes me nervous. anywhere where the instructions talk about uninstalling stuff thats when the vision of "Brickage" arrives. Should I be concerend with this? I really want to try the usb loader deal but can't make myself go through the next steps...........

The following should get you a cios, so that you can play backups on your wii:

    >>Those who had previously (before the update) installed ios249 may have a chance to play backed up games easily. They should run cios38rev14 installer from Homebrew Channel and use ios250. if that does not work, try running it again, but using one of the following : ios202, ios222,ios223,ios249.Then you can proceed to D. If one of these does not work either, you should have to do the following:

PART B: The extermination of the evil stub ios249

Ok, so N did this update and thos ppl knew that we use ios249 to isntall our cios and place our backups. What did they do? they invented an empty ios ("stub") and place it in slot 249, to stop us. Like they will! Muhahahaha. Here is what we do about it. We will uninstall ios249 stub, and then isntall our own cios38rev14 in slot 249:

B1) GET THIS PACK(Thanks to Dogeggs, he sure made the trick... this will probably work for anyone) or GET THIS PACK 2 or GET THIS PACK 3 (pick start with the first one, if you get an error pick the next one and follow instructions from B2 and on again. One of this will do the trick without an error. If still nothing, try this)

B2)Format the SD card, with FAT32, place the contents of the included folder in the SD card root. Only files in SD root should be:
    root:\Wad\
    root:\bootmii\
    root:\startup.elf
    root:\boot.dol
    root:\00000001\ <-(if available)

B3)Place the SD card in the wii, start HBC and press home ar the main HBC screen. (If your wii boots to Bootmii, just go to B5)

    B4)Select bootmii and wait.

B5)Wadmanager should start.(On ios select, select ios36, or try a few, 249, 250 dunno,we are scratching our heads with this)!!

B6)Select SD card and press A to continue.

B7)Select ios249 from wad folder and press A

B8)change the action to "uninstall wad", press A

B9)Done!! now to the next step!!

Any words of encouragement or caution?????????

Nothing is gauranteed, power failures or unforeseen events.
This is entirely at your own risk. Having said that this guide does work, and has worked for many people.
Read right through it, make sure you do each step correctly, when you get a question with an answer yes or no make sure you know whats happening.
People do brick their Wii's, most are recoverable, some are not.
    Only you can decide.

I was able to get a backup last night using the console buttons so I feel a little bit better. However I am still timid. What is the "Preloader"? I understand that if I need a restore I put my backup backon my sd and restore but I am not sure how you get the preloader or how to run it.

I almost took the pluge and did the CIOS but as soon as I got into the installer and it said "Yes Take the Risk" I chickened out and aborted.

All preloader does is move itself "in front" of the system menu, so that if you brick you can go to the bootmii ios and restore from your backup.

there is little risk of bricking but as wiijohn said "Nothing is gauranteed, power failures or unforeseen events."

i have installed in multiple times and all has gone well dont be afraid...
If you dont want to brick your going to have to take the risk or a brick from preloader
