You need DVDx and MyplayerCE on the Wii.
Yuo can download a movie torrent .avi and save it to your HDD. The HDD usually has 2 partitions, one WBFS and one NTFS. Use MyPlayer from HBC, select USB then file.
    Enjoy.
Let me know if you need more detailed instuction.

I have never converted my own DVD's. But yes if you can rip them, put them onto your HDD, MPlayer will play them.
You can also play your DVD movies in the Wii itself, its not recommened to do this regularly as the reader is not designed for these type od DVD's.

WBFS is only for Wii games. I have one other partition which is NTFS, mainly because my OS is XP and thats what it uses unless I tell it otherwise.
Mplayer will look at FAT32, I think there may be a limitation of 4GB on FAT32 or FAT but am not sure.
When you open up Mplayer its quite comprehensive, its looks at FTP, NTFS, FAT32 Shout, uTube, more than I can handle.
