Correct, you cannot do it by USB, you must have and SD card.

why do i have to have homebrew channel? i dont want it
all i want is the 4.1 firmware thats all nothing else only the firmware.
so why cant someone put the firmware file so i can add it to a game i have and run the game and accept the system update???
it cant really be that hard, from what i read you guys do alot harder stuff then what i am asking for.
Well firstly, you need a way to install the System Menu, eg Homebrew Channel and a wad manager. secondly why would you come to a modding site if you don't want to mod your Wii, i'm confused. If you want to update your system menu then just update through Nintendo Ofiicially.
i come to a modding site to find the firmware
i cant get a update via nintendo cause i want 4.1 and not 4.2
plus i cant put my wii online
ill try and explain it
there is updates that come on game discs that update the system menu
people take out these update files so the wii wont update
i want the file that they take out so i can put it into a pal game and reburn it so my wii will update.
from what i understand if you can take it out, im shore u can put it in.
Yes you can, as i stated you need a way to install it. And that way is to have Homebrew channel installed along with a Wad Manager and the .wad file for the new system menu 4.1. The search option on these forums are the best place to start.
ok s0ur thanks ill leave you alone for awhile now
Here is the SAFE 4.1 updater, but again you will need Homebrew and a Wad Manager to get it running: http://www.mediafire.com/?tilt2yydyly
BootMii is an awesome utility for the Wii, it allows you to make a backup of your NAND [the vital system of your Wii] so that if anything happens, you can use a backup that you created with BootMii to restore your bricked Wii.
And you don't have to leave me alone, I am here to help and would like to finish what we started.

if i install bootmii do i have a new system menu or does it still boot to the default?
Once you install BootMii it sits inside of boot2 [or as an IOS in the case it won't install to boot2 (don't worry, it will tell you if you can't install to boot2, and ask if you would like to install as IOS)]. Unless you have the files that BootMii needs to load on the SD card [which is a folder called BootMii, and inside the folder are three files, armboot.bin, bootmii.ini and ppcboot.elf] at the time of boot then it will just load right into the System Menu. Or in the case that you can only install it as an IOS, the only way to get into BootMii, is through the Homebrew Channel by pressing the Home button on the Wiimote.
