    birthday boy needs help

    my dad has givin me an newly modded wii with drivekey installed ( no homebrew etc. ) and have a couple of questions regarding updates:

    - when does an update actualy happens? at star of a game? does the system ask or its done automaticly?

    -my birthday is coming up soon and i know ill have real bought game givin to me,( ex. new mario ) if these games ask for updates, will my downloaded backups still work after its done?

    - some of my backups (dvd's) were givin to me by buddies and im not sure what region they are from, is there a proggy that can read them?

    - im using regionfrii to change some of my games from PAL to US , is it safe to take an update using that proggy?

    we've read lots here but havent found. i thank you for guiding us

    First be sure to never update out of region.

    Your chip should be able to block updates from disks.

    If updates are allowed they happen before the game starts and you are prompted to accept the update- never update from an out of region game.

    System Menu 4.2 currently breaks regionfree on chips, avoid 4.2 until new firmware is released for you chip- if you care.

    Some games may load a black screen, this means that your wii is missing an ios needed by the game to run. These can be installed by allowing in-region updates from discs that contain the required ios- remember to avoid 4.2 as it may be out on newer games.

    Your backup games will still work following an update from disk, so long as you don't update to 4.2 and the games are out of your region.

    If you allow an update from an out of region disk you will semi-brick your wii.

    Well 4.2 is very new, so it would not be on many games. You could do some research here and on the net to find out what updates are on the game before you update. If you have an iso on your pc you can view the files with wiiscrubber.

    @boule777
    get ImgBurn (the disc burn program) ?
    load in the ISO disc (backup copy of game)
    ImgBurn -> Mode -> Read , Tool -> Drive -> View Sector
    the game ID and region will be shown on the HEX table.
    eg. Mario & Sonic at Olympus Winter Games 2010 ( actually, in short form)
    ROLP8P <-- game ID , the fourth letter is the region, J=jpn, P=pal, E=usa

    >>>>> for real bought games !!!! u can check the Game ID on the inner ring of the DVD disc. it's engraved lightly.

    also, visit the Tealc's thread " Which IOS the games play", u'll find it interesting

    happy birthday !

    okay done some reading about the 4.2 update and if i understand it correctly the only danger for what im using is if i have PAL backups it wont work on my U wii, correct? ( remember i only play games on backups or original dvd gams, no homebrew etc.) for now all my games do not ask for updates but i know ill get the new mario original for my b-day and i read that it asks to update, so i might need to do so if i wanna play the game.
    thank you again
