Question on new 3.1-4.1 soft mode

I read this guide, and it said that "it will work on all Wiis up to 4.1". Then, later in step 4, it said that "If you are on 3.3 or 3.4 then you must update".
I am a little bit confused about these messages.
Can you guys explain to me why we have to update from 3.3 or 3.4 to the newer 4.1?
    My new is 3.4U
So, I just want to make sure that I can leave it as is, or I have to update to 4.1 as said in step 4.

    Thanks,

    BAV

You need to update as Preloader is not capable with 3.3/3.4 while it is capable with 4.0/4.1. Preloader is recommended as it is a great protection against Banner bricks.

Now, I understand why I need to update to 4.1 version.

Also, on step 2b of this guide, it said that "Use the power/reset/eject buttons to navigate the Bootmii menu..."
Where are these buttons located? On the Wii, or the Wii remote?

With an original 3.4Wii, those buttons won't work anyway, They are buttons on the Wii console, but work when bootmii can be installed as boot2. They generally don't work in consoles where bootmii can only be installed as IOS. The bootmii menu is then navigable using a GameCube controller.
