Its best to update to 4.1. This is a good guide. If you are already modded.

Or start from scratch with this.

    hi everybody,

i'm a little new to this, and i have been looking for threads which answered this question too -

i have a wii with system menu 3.0 and i'd like to upgrade to 4.1 (before or after installing hbc? i dont know if that matters)
those threads that you linked didnt specifically talk about downloading modded firmware or that kind of thing
is that what you do to get 4.1 now that 4.2 is out ?

thanks in advance for your help !

I think you should read a little on how to softmod a wii before attempting changes. You could be left with a paper weight.
If you already have HBC you could use the first link, this explains how to download and install the software.
Check your system out to see what you have and what works.
    Preloader, bootmii and such.
I am willing to help, but you will need some knowledge.

yeah i've fully read the 3.1-4.1 guide, but i haven't tried it yet because i'm currently clearing a harddrive and stuff :P
the guide says nothing about updating except that its optional, but since its from before 4.2 came out, it was okay to upgrade
( http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...d-any-wii.html -- this is the guide i meant btw)

    anyway it says
"4. UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM MENU VERSION (OPTIONAL)

This step is optional unless you are on 3.3 or 3.4, you may upgrade now if you wish, boot2 v4 owners cannot downgrade! but can upgrade if you want. If you want to update to 4.1 then make sure you have at least 250 blocks free or you will brick, install IOS60-patched first (step 5a), then run Firmware Updater 4.1. If you are on 3.3 or 3.4 then you must update."

theres nothing there about how to update to 4.1 err how to get 4.1, because now if i update i'll get 4.2
do you know where to download 4.1 from somewhere other than nintendo that isn't super sketchy or will ruin my wii? lol

i hope this isn't too unclear, thanks again for your help - the rest of the guide is great, really clear and easy to understand, its just this that i'm unsure of

Don't know if there is a diferent route to update a 3.0 systemto 4.1 but everything is included to update to 4.1 using Waninkoko's 4.1 updater.Just don't forget to install IOS60-patched first Once you download the rar you will see what is all in the softmod pack.

You may want to update to 3.1 first. Rent, borrow, or steal a disc with a 3.1 update on it and update to 3.1, after that look in the tutorials section.

3.1 update - mario kart wii, ssbb, super mario galaxy

just playin, don't really steal a game.

While there is no harm in trying a game disc to update to 3.1 before softmodding, it is not necessary. You can following the 3.1-4.1 softmod tutorial as is to get your 3.0Wii softmodded. There haven't been too many 3.0Wiis showing up, that's why the advice was to try to get your Wii within the parameters of the softmod guide. It is fine to go ahead though. We had a 3.0 Wii some time ago and Dogeggs told that member to go ahead with the softmod. If, after reading the tutorial, you have any additional questions, please post them in the associated thread-thanks and Good Luck.

Edit:Oh, the softmod tutorial gets your Wii to 4.1, if you want. The way to avoid the 4.2 update is to turn off WiiConnect24, but allow the Wii access to the Internet. Internet ON; WiiConnect24 OFF.
